When the Romantic Movement was still in its first fervor, it was a common matter of debate whether people should marry for love or for money. The young people concerned usually favored love, and their parents usually favored money. In the novels of the period, the dilemma was felicitously solved by the discovery, on the last page, that the apparently penniless heroine was really a great heiress. But in real life young men who hoped for this denouement were apt to be disappointed. Prudent parents, while admitting that their daughters should marry for love, took care that all the young men they met should be rich. This method was sometimes very successful; it was adopted, for example, by my maternal grandfather, who had a large number of romantic daughters, none of whom married badly.

In these days of psychology the matter no longer looks so simple as it did eighty years ago. We realize now that money may be the cause, or part of the cause, of quite genuine love; of this there are notable examples in history.

Sept.11 delivered both a shock and a surprise—the attack, and our response to it—and we can argue forever over which mattered more. They’ve learned a lot about us since then. And so have we.

The University of London is a nonsectarian, co-educational, government-supported institution, located in London, England. It was founded in 1836 to meet the needs of a growing middle class who desired nonsectarian education in the arts, science, or medicine. Up to that time, the existing

On comparing notes with Moore, I was confirmed in one or two points which I had always laid down in considering poor Byron’s character. In a society that sees the role of medicine as prolonging life, death is often reduced to an incurable condition, an ―enemy‖. According to this view, acceptance of death can be seen as gloomy fatalism rather than clear-eyed realism.

These days, many people do not, and it may be that, as our religious faith has receded, so has our ability, as a society, to acknowledge death. As individuals, however, we have no choice. With or without faith, we must muddle along, finding meaning, or solace when we can. Carole Arbuckle says, ―A lot of dying people want to talk about what has kept them going. It can be religion, family, fast cars or fishing. There’s no dogma to it. Some see no meaning. That’s OK. I support that, too.‖

These days, death is often abstracted. We see hundreds of cartoon and movie deaths, and we remember the war dead, but, somehow, these ubiquitous images bring us no closer to understanding what it means to die. We have few words of that understanding, and perhaps that is as it should be. Even in a secular age, however, we need a space in our lives for an understanding of our own mortality to unfold.

David Dary’s The Santa Fe Trail is one tough trip into the history of the Old West, a straightforward narration extending from the early exploration of the southwest to today, based on accounts of what many accept as the ―truth‖ about an important part of United States history.

The author is an experienced enough guide when it comes to westering. His books are testimonials to a penchant for covering the biggest subjects in the most comprehensive way. But experience as an Old West historian, especially in New West times, isn’t everything.

The Santa Fe Trail is an epic subject. It is filled with dreams and disappointments, romance and myth, or as his book’s subtitle would have it, ―history, legends, and lore‖. But what is history?

One might assume that this will be a ―factual‖, realistic narrative of people, times, and places with some legends and lore as condiment. But the ―facts‖ here generally reflect the once-accepted dominant Anglo culture’s belief in Manifest Destiny and the realization of mercantile dreams. And the few attempts at recounting legends and lore often fall flat, given the lack of panache in the telling.

For travelers to Europe, from January 2002, there’s something special on offer besides all the usual sight. It’s the chance to be in on the end of an era, and the birth of a new currency. The mad coot shuts its short, peeping trap. It is no longer merely quiet—silence evaporates, disappears into thin, darkening air. I like looking at my watch and seeing that night has fallen just before half past four in the afternoon.

The high-tech revolution has inspired a seemingly endless stream of new and exciting electronic products that we just can’t live without. In fact, the dizzying s peed of technological innovation can make last year’s must this year’s junk. And that’s the problem. The average life span of a personal computer has shrunk to around 18 moths –and this has nothing to do with worn-out mice or damaged disk drives. Simply put, electronic products can become obsolete before you’ve even figured out how they work.

So what happens to all those old keyboards, monitors, organizers and CPUs? Most are stashed away in the attic or forgotten in a corporate warehouse, taking up valuable space. But many end up in landfills, and that is where the trouble really begins.

Computer monitors can contain up to 3.t kg of lead and can actually be considered hazardous waste once they are no longer in use. Circuit boards in

electronic products contain cadmium, chromium and mercury, all of which are toxic substances that can leach into groundwater if left in a landfill. Unfortunately, this disposal problem is not going to disappear anytime soon—in fact, it is growing by the minute. In Japan alone, consumers throw away some 20 million TVs, washing machines, refrigerators and air conditioners each year. In Europe, six million metric tons of electrical and electronic equipment were generated in 1998 alone, and that volume is expected to increase three to five percent per year—which means by 2010 it could nearly double.

Mort Walker doesn’t like people to refer to the International museum of cartoon Art as ―his‖ museum. But the creator of Beetle bailey is the guy who got th is repository of yuks going 26 years ago after 10 years of fundraising, then shepherded it thought locations in Greenwich, Conn., and Rye Brook, N.Y, before planting it amid Florida’s ritzy Mizner Park retail shops.

The Museum doesn’t just feature decades-old comic strips. It houses a wide variety of art forms falling into the cartoon category, including political cartoons, comic books and graphic novels, one-panel gag cartoons (the kind found in magazines), animation, caricatures, sports cartoons, book and magazine illustrations, and even advertising and greeting card art.

Although most of the art is hung at adult level, the museum has kid-friendly at tractions, including a theatre showing animated short films and the Create-A-Town Center, where they can learn to draw cartoon by hand or on a computer. It also offers a cartoon art school for children and adults, cartoon camp sessions for kids, learning and literary programs, and other activities.

Hard as this may be to believe, there was a time, early in the last century, when no savvy European (and few Americans) believed the Wright brothers had been the first to fly. The framer’s intent of setting up the American government will never be known for sure, but it is gathered that they preferred a republic over a democracy. In the constitutional convention the drafters had to decide how much power they would entrust with the people of the United States, and how much should be controlled by representatives.
