The Technology That's Transforming Gardening

With the holiday weekend coming up and the weather (hopefully) taking a turn for the better, many of us may 1 feeling a bit green-fingered (精通

园艺的) and turn our 2 to gardening.

The New York-based tech Bitponics is hoping that worrying about seasons will be a thing of the past when it comes to 3 your own plants, fruit and vegetables.

Bitponics claims to be "your 4 gardening assistant". The system it sells is a cloud-based hydroponics (水栽培) gardening manager.

Many people may only have heard of hydroponics in terms of growing cannabis (大麻), but actually it is 5 used in farming.

Hydroponics basically 6 growing plants without soil, instead using a reservoir (蓄水池) of nutrient solutions in water.

What Bitponics strives to do is automate hydroponic systems.

The technology it has developed is an electronic box that has 7 attached. These sensors, or probes, go into the reservoir of your hydroponic system and monitor things like pH levels, 8 , humidity (湿度), and the data is then sent 9 to the cloud.

Two outlets let you plug in lights or pumps, which can be set on timers to aid growing. A web app gives you a grow plan, which 10 you by text or e-mail when you need to add nutrients or change the water reservoir.

The Dangers of Reading

One of the biggest reasons I depart from my minimalist (极简主义的) philosophy is reading, 11 , reading about what others are doing. I read a blog post, or a magazine article about someone doing something 12 : travelling, using a new productivity system, making bread, etc. And then I want to do that too. And I think we all do this. We all read inspirational things, or hear about them from a friend, and 13 ourselves doing the same thing.

This is often a good thing—inspiration is good, isn't it? Learning from others is 14 good. But this inspiration can often 15 me to forget about what I've learned, and soon I'm heading down a new path, buying a lot of things to support my new interest, only to 16 this interest when I've read something else.

This has happened to me dozens of times. I want to learn Spanish, programming, bread making, 17 writing, guitar; each of these is wonderful. But when I become especially interested in the next new thing to learn about, the other things suffer. I can't learn about them all at once. Such 18 pulls away my focus and keeps me from doing well at any one thing.

What's the antidote (解)? Focus, namely, 19 to one thing long enough to learn it. Don't be distracted by every new thing you read. The answer isn't to stop reading, but to pay more 20 attention to your impulses when you do read.

A. abandon E. definitely I. fiction M. satisfaction

B. careful F. distraction J. imagine N. specifically

C. cause G. facilitating K. plentiful O. stick

Caffeine May Improve Memory

A cup of coffee in the morning may improve long-term memory, according to a new study.

The study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, found that participants who had been given caffeine (咖啡因) pills had better

memory 21 Scientists studied 160 participants aged 18 to 30, and showed them 22 photos of items at the beginning, asking study subjects to classify the items as "indoor" or "outdoor". Half the participants were given a caffeine pill after that 23 , the other half a placebo (安慰剂). One day later, all the participants were shown the same pictures, as well as some they hadn't seen before. They were asked whether each photo was new, old or 24 to the originals.

While both groups were able to 25 between old and new pictures, the researchers 26 discovered that the participants who took the caffeine pills were better at determining which pictures were similar to the first round. The researchers remain 27 about how caffeine may influence memory, but they speculate that it could interfere with hormones (荷尔蒙,激素) related to memory making.

The study needs to be repeated before any proven conclusions can be made, but it's not the first to find benefits in caffeine intake (摄取). In fact, similar findings were made in a population of bees, which leads researchers to believe that the caffeine played a 28 in improving recall.

Still, highly caffeinated products have been linked to 29 events like poor sleep. In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it was looking into the safety of energy drinks after 30 several reports of illnesses and even deaths after taking energy drinks.

Do You Use Your Cell Phone a Lot?

Too much time spent on your cell phone doesn't mean you're more connected and happier.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Air pollution can spread from city to city. It even spreads from one country to another. Some northern European countries have had “black snow”from pollutants that have traveled through the air from other countries and have fallen with the snow. So air pollution is really a global problem. Air pollution can kill babies, older people, and those who have respiratory(呼吸的)diseases. As found in cities, air pollution increases the risks of certain lung diseases. Air pollution can cause both airplane and car accidents because it cuts down visibility (能见度). There are other possible health dangers from air pollution that we don’t know much about. For example, scientists are trying to find out whether chemicals that reach us from the air may cause changes in our cells. These changes might cause babies to be born with serious birth defects. Scientists are trying to learn how all the many chemicals are apt(易于的)to take into our bodies from air, water, food, and even medicines act together to affect our health and the way our bodies work. That is another reason why it is so important to begin to control pollution now instead of waiting until we learn all the answers. Air pollution costs us a lot of money. It corrodes(腐蚀)our buildings. It damages farm crops and forests. It has a destructive effect on our works of art. The cost of all this damage to our government is great. It would be much more worthwhile, both for us and for the government, to spend our tax dollars on air pollution control. 1. Air pollution may lead to airplane accidents because . A. civilization may be ruined if pollution is not controlled B. pollution is more serious in Europe than it is in America C. most people do not know that pollution is a serious problem D. we should learn all the answers before we begin to control pollution Passage Two Stiletto heels could be banned from the workplace because of health and safety reasons, according to British Trade Union bosses. The Trade Union Congress, predominantly male, has proposed a motion arguing that high heels are disrespectful to women while they also contribute to long term injuries. They propose instead that women wear “sensible shoes”with an inch heel limit in an attempt to avoid future foot and back pain as well as injuries. The motion is due to be debated at next month’s conference. The motion states: “Congress believes high heels may look glamorous on the Hollywood catwalks but are completely in appropriate for the day-to-day working environment. Feet bear the burden of daily life, and for many workers prolonged standing, badly fitted footwear, and in particular high heels can be a hazard. Around two million days a year are lost through sickness as a result of lower limb disorders. Wearing high heels can cause long-term foot problems and also serious foot, knee and back pain and damaged joints. Many employers in the retail sector force women workers to wear high heels as part of their dress code. More must be done to raise awareness of this problem so that women workers and their feet are protected.” Nadline Dorries, the Tory Member of Parliament, however criticized the motion and said the extra height heels give women can help them when in the workplace. “I’m 5ft 3in and need every inch of my Christian Louboutin heels to look my male colleagues in the eye,”she said. “If high heels were banned in Westminster, no one would be able to find me. Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占) one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it. Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite
