Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

In 1789 the US government passed a law which said that the land of the American Indians could never be taken from them without their agreement. One hundred years later, however, the Indians had only a very small part of the land that originally belonged to them. How did this great injustice occur?

After 1812 white settlers began to move west across North America. At first, the settlers and the Indians lived in peace. However, the number of settlers increased greatly every year, and slowly the Indians began to see the white settlers as a danger to their survival. To feed themselves, the settlers killed more and more wild animals. The Indians, who depended on these animals for food, had to struggle against starvation. The settlers also brought with them many diseases which were common in white society, but which were new for the Indians. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100,000 to 30,000.

More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. The old promises to the Indians were broken; the federal government began to move groups of Indians from their original homelands to other, poorer parts of the country. Some Indians reacted angrily and violently to this treatment. They began to attack white settlers, and the Indian War began. For thirty years, until the late 1880s, different groups of Indians fought against the injustices of the white man. They had a few famous successes, but the result of the struggle was never in doubt. There were too many white soldiers, and they were too powerful. Many Indians were killed; the survivors were moved from their homelands to different areas of the country. It was a terrible chapter in the history of a country that promised freedom and equality to everyone.

21.What is said about the land of the American Indians in the passage?

A)The land of the American Indians was taken from them without their consent.

B)The American Indians had very few successes in their fight against the injustice of the

white man.

C)The Us law about the land of the American Indians was violated as soon as it was

passed.

D)The American Indians have finally regained the right of their own land.

22.Why did American Indians begin to see the white settlers as a danger to them?

C)They took away their animals and sold them to other white people

D) They made American Indians work hard without pay

23.What does the writer mean by “the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared”?

C)The white settlers began to ignore the law concerning the rights of Indians

D)The government began to ignore the rights of the Indians

24.The US government began to move Indians off their original land. How did the Indians

D)He believes that the government cannot be criticized for its treatment of the Indians Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

In the opinion of many Americans and Europeans, we began to really explore our world only in the sixteenth century. According to them, the sailors of the ancient world did not explore distant parts of the world; they did not have the necessary knowledge or skills for long sea journeys. However, the people who have this opinion are forgetting two important facts of history.

First, sometimes early scientists have an idea which is correct, but scientists in later centuries do not believe it. For example, about 270 BC, a Greek scientist had an idea which we all believe today: The earth moves around the sun. But for the following 1600 years scientists did not believe this. In their opinion, the sun clearly moved around the earth. They discovered the truth again only in the fifteenth century!

The second fact of history that many people forget is this: Ancient does not mean primitive. For example, the ancient Egyptians knew a great deal about the stars; they used the knowledge to find their way across the oceans. Two thousand years ago a Greek scientist who lived in Egypt calculated the distance around the earth. The results of his calculations were close the actual distance we know today! So the ancients had a great deal of scientific knowledge. They also had skills which equaled the skills of today. For example, 1300 years ago and before, fishermen in Ireland built their boats of wood and leather. Today some fishermen in Ireland still make boats of the same design. They use tools and materials which are not very different from the tools and materials which their ancestors used. Why? The ancient design of the boats is good, and with skillful sailors, these boats can sail in all kinds of weather.

Clearly, long before the sixteenth century, people had the skills, the knowledge, and the equipment which were necessary for long journeys by sea. The world did not have to wait until the sixteenth century for its first explorers!

26.Which of the following statements is consistent with the passage?

A)According to the writer, we only began to really explore the world in the sixteenth

century

B)The ancient Egyptians had very little knowledge about the stars

C)In the history of science, people sometimes have to discover a fact a second time

D)The writer agrees with many Americans and Europeans except for the two facts

mentioned in the passage.

27.Why does the writer use the example of the Greek scientist who calculated the distance

around the world?

A)He wants to show the knowledge of ancient scientists

B)He wants to give an example of something which later scientists greatly improved

C)He wants to show that science has not been developing significantly

D)He wants to give an example of scientific knowledge which was available to early

explorers

28. The word “primitive”(Line 1,Paragraph 3) means____

A) underestimated B) unsophisticated C) basic D) primary

29.According to the writer, why do Irish fishermen still use boats like the boats which their

ancestors used 1000 years ago?

A)They don’t have the money for expensive boats

B)Boats made of wood or leather are light and fast

C)The necessary materials are easily available

D)The design of the boats is very good

30.“People from the ancient world sailed around Africa. They even reached America.” In your

opinion, how would the writer of the passage feel about the statements?

A)In his opinion, they are possible

B)He does not believe them

C)He has used this as an important fact to praise ancient civilization

D)In his opinion, ancient explorers did not have the skills necessary for long journeys Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few, for example; the average among students is about 6 per person.

Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term “friendship”. In all cases, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between them and the reasons for their interest in each other vary greatly.

At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to know people, we consider things like age, race, looks, economic and social status, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.

We pay attention to actual behavior, facial expression, and the way a person speaks. Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than ordinary acquaintances. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty in making friends. A friendly look with the wrong facial expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as unfriendliness. People who do not look one in the eye are not trusted when, in fac t, they simply do not have confidence.

Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests—they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. The more closely involved people become, the more they depend on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to let them down. Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion. Imagine going on a long trip with someone you occasionally meet for a drink!

In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relationship between two people. But the mutual support and understanding that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a close and lasting relationship, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race.

31.According to the passage, a friend is __________.

A)somebody we usually take for granted

B) a person with whom we often go out with

C)someone with whom we occasionally go for a long trip

D)not just anybody we get on well with

32.Which of the following factors does the author believe are important in developing

friendship?

A)Age and background. B) Economic and social position.

C)Race and looks. D) Same interests and behavior.

33.The passage tells us that sometimes a face with the wrong expression could be mistaken as a

sign of __________.

A)Nervousness B) confidence C) unfriendliness D) distrust

34.By saying that “some relationship are a result of argument and discussion” (Line 1, Para. 5),

the author means that __________.

A)bad relationships are a result of argument and discussion

B)connections with people can be developed through discussion and argument

C)argument and discussion can lead to improving personal relationships

D)arguing and discussing things will sometimes result in friendship

35.We learn from the passage that __________.

A)friendship can overcome difference in experience

B)there are no special ceremonies to strengthen friendship

D)friendship can be strengthened by smiles and soft voices

Passage Four

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Singapore, especially in places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous.

The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians(行人) to cross roads safely. Overhead bridges are used in very much the same way as zebra crossings. They are more efficient although less convenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older people. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why the government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time.

The government of Singapore has spent large sums of money building these bridges. For their own safety, pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking their lives by dashing across the road. Old people, however, may find it a little difficult climbing up and down the steps, but it still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.

Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to use them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.

38.Which of the following is true according to this passage?

A)Overhead bridges are found in places where traffic is heavy.

B)Overhead bridges are found in every part of Singapore.

C)Overhead bridges are found in many parts of the big cities in the world.

D)Overhead bridges are only found in the capital of Singapore.

39.The expression “zebra crossings” in Paragraph 2 means ______.
