阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A federal judge sentenced Bruce Jones to 12 years in federal prison for fraud(诈骗罪). Over a 10-year period, Jones had managed to cheat thousands of people throughout the state out of almost $10 million.

He advertised his fantastic ideas on TV. “For some reason,” Jones said, “TV seems to break the ice. Even though you are a total stranger to the viewer, once he sees you on TV in his home,

h e feels like he knows you. You enter his living room and become a trusted friend.”

Jones had an imagination that wouldn’t quit. One time he showed viewers an “official government” earthquake report which “proved” that the western half of California would collapse into the sea within three years. For $100, he said, Jones would insure(承保) your house and property for full value. Thousands of people who saw that TV ad sent him a hundred dollars each.

In another TV ad, Jones claimed that he had come to an agreement with the federal and state government for exclusive(独享的)air rights. He told viewers that, for only $100, they could own the first 10 miles above all their property. You would be able to charge any commercial plane that flew over your property $100 per crossing. You would also be able to charge government rockets, satellites, space shuttles, and space stations $100 for each and every violation of your air rights

Another time, Jones claimed to have invented a product that gets rid of calories. He showed the viewers a spray can of “NoCal.” He said that by simply spraying NoCal on your food, a chemical interaction would cause all the calories in the food to simply disappear within about 10 seconds. The NoCal was only $10 a can. As usual, Jones received thousands of checks in the mail.

The judge told Jones that he should be ashamed of himself. Jones responded that he was very ashamed of himself, and that when he got out of prison he hoped to become a TV adviser to help people avoid getting cheated. He told the judge that he was already developing an instructional CD that, for merely $100, would save people thousands of dollars in scams(骗局). The judge nodded, and then changed Jones’ sentence from 10 years to 12 years.

41. According to Jones, he could successfully cheat many people mainly because .

A. he promised them a large profit

B. they were too eager to make money

C. they believed too much in TV ads

D. he was skillful in communicating

with people

A. were mainly from low income families

B. all had a rich knowledge of chemistry

C. were probably interested in losing weight

D. usually did the shopping through the

Internet

44. The judge changed the sentence at last because .

A. Jones was planning another big scam

B. he could hardly believe what Jones had told him

C. Jones had cheated more people than he expected

D. he had suffered from Jones’ scams himself

Old-Fashioned Play—For Pay

Kids !Come to have a ball! Or 60,000 of them! There’s a new type of business franchise (特许商店) that is appearing in shopping malls and neighborhoods across America offering pay-per-use indoor playgrounds, feature toys, games ,supervised fun and a workout that doesn’t break the family bank.

As public playgrounds grow increasingly worn and dirty, the for-profit centers offer clean, safe supervised activities as well as a variety of challenging exercises to develop youngsters’ physical fitness, usually for a fee of around 5$ an hour. “Playgrounds are dirty and not supervised,” says Dick Guggenhe imer, owner of the two-month-old Discovery Zone in Yonkers, N.Y., part of Kansas City-based chain, “We are indoors; we are padded(铺上软垫); parents can feel their child is safe”.

In order to satisfy the need of two-earner families, the new franchise stayed open in the evenings, long after traditional public playgrounds have grown dark and unusable. However these new playgrounds are not meant to be day-care centers. Parents are expected to stay and play with their kids rather than drop them off. But several also provide high-tech baby-sitting services. At some of the Discovery Zones, parents can register their children in special supervised programs, then leave them and slip away for a couple of hours to enjoy a movie or dinner. If there is a problem, Mom and Dad are called.

The most fun of all, though, is getting to do what parents used to do in the days before two-earner families and two-hour commutes; play with their kids. That, at least, is old-fashioned, even at per-hour rates.

45.What is this article mainly talking about?

A.The fast development of Discovery Zone.

B.The disadvantages of outdoor playgrounds.

C.A new type of business franchise for kids.

D.Children can play in the public playgrounds without parents’ care.

46.According to the article, which of the following is true to the new playground?

A.The cost is high for a family.

B.It stayed open in the evening just as traditional playgrounds.

C.It doesn’t allow parents to leave their kids.

D.It’s a place where parents can play together with their kids.

47.What does the writer mean by saying “old-fashioned”?

A.The so-called new playground is outdated.

B.The new playground is also enjoyed by old people.

C.The new playground is actually enjoyed by parents.

D.The new playground offers a fashion which was popular in the past.

48.What is the writer’s attitude toward the new playground?

A. Agreeable

B. Indifferent(漠不关心的)

C. Objective

D. Doubtful

Free and secure accommodation, no bills and even the odd home-cooked meal. It sounds like the perfect living arrangement for cash-strapped students.

Two mothers believe they have devised a way for struggling students to save on accommodation costs when they leave home to study at university.

Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude have launched Student Swaps, an online accommodation forum (论坛) for parents and students, in advance of the introduction in September of £3,000 higher education top-up fees.

Their website says, “The principle behind Student Swaps is to e nable students to literally swap (交换) family homes.” The website will hold a database of students who would like to swap and link them with suitable matches. So those from one town / city could swap with those from a different town / city.

The site describ es itself as offering a “cost-free accommodation alternative… at a time of growing student debt”. There is no charge for the service at the moment but Ms Barnham and

Ms Flude intend to introduce a £10 annual fee if it becomes established.

However, the National Union of Students (NUS) has warned that, while the scheme may sound appealing to struggling freshers, it lacks any formal regulation.

Veronica King, NUS vice-president of welfare, said, “The fact that this scheme has even been suggested is evidence to the high levels of debt students now face on graduation.” Recent research has shown that students are more likely to live at home in coming years, in a bid to cut down on the cost of a degree.

“This is worrying, as it may mean that students choose their university on the basis of where it is, rather than because it offers the best course for them. It also means students will miss out on what is for some a key part of the student experience-living away from home.”

53. A “cas h-strapped” student means one who __________.

A. lacks money

B. prefers to stay at home

C. is careful with money

D. wants to change cash

54. What is Kate Barnham and Amanda Flude’s purpose of launching Student Swaps?

A.To provide cheaper accommodation for students.

B. To let students stay close to their universities.

C.To help students spend less on accommodation costs.

D. To let students exchange ideas freely online.

55. What can students do on Student Swaps?

A. They can find students to exchange homes with.

B. They can make friends with students from a different city.

C. They can borrow money to pay for their higher education.

D. They can voice their opinions against the rising cost of a degree.

56. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. High Cost Troubles University Students in UK.

B. Students Swaps is Welcomed by Students in UK.

C. Two Mothers’ Good Intention to Help Students in UK.

D. Website Helps Students Live at Someone Else’s Home.

Icebergs are among nature’s most impressive creations, and yet most people have never seen one. They come into being somewhere in faraway, freezing waters, amid thunderous noise and splashing turbulence(漩涡), which in most cases no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly melt away just as unnoticed.

They have been called objects of complete beauty. Appearing in an endless variety of shapes,

they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green or purple, in light colors or in dark colors. They are graceful, stately, inspiring in calm, sunlit seas.

But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and that they are in the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear weather one is wise to stay a safe distance away from them. Most of their main part is hidden below the water, so their underwater parts may extend out far beyond the visible top. Also, they may roll over unexpectedly, stirring the waters around them.

Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water, float about awhile, and finally melt. Icebergs floating today are made of snows that have fallen over long ages of time. They include snows that drifted down hundreds, or many thousands, or in some cases maybe a million years ago. The snows fell in Polar regions and on cold mountains, where they melted only a little or not at all, and so collected to great depths over the years and centuries.

As each year’s snow accumulation lay on the surfa ce, evaporation(蒸发)and melting caused the snowflakes slowly to become tiny grains of ice. When new snow fell on top of the old, it too turned to icy grains. So blankets of snow and ice grains mounted(increased)layer upon layer and were of such great thickness that the weight of the upper layers pressed the lower ones. With time and pressure from above, the many small ice grains joined and changed to larger crystals, and eventually the deeper crystals merged into a solid mass of ice.

A. usually melt quickly

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.

In this busy, modern world, if we want to complete our work effectively and efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. If we lose our partner, then we will fail. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by cooperating with them.

When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. And we can share our pleasure and sadness with him. But it can be difficult to cooperative with someone we dislike. In such a situation, we may focus on our work, instead of our partner. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we’ll learn that he is a man to get along well with. Even if this doesn’t happen, it’s still worth a try.

How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, (we should try to listen to others’ opinions. Secondly, i f he makes mistakes, we also try to point them out. Thirdly, we mustn’t beat others to make them in unfavorable position)

Thank you for your listening!
