It may well be one of the least hi-tech nature counts in the UK, and involves rangers(护林员)sticking their arms down a hole knowing they will feel one of five things: a puffin(海鹦)egg, a puffin, bird waste, nothing, or the annoyed reaction of any animal should a giant hand suddenly enter its home. “I can show you a couple of scars. It does hurt. But I'm used to it, ” said Harriet Reid, area ranger at the National Trust.

This year, Reid is leading a particularly important puffin count on the Farne Islands. The pandemic meant full yearly surveys were impossible in 2020 and 2021. The rangers have an idea of how healthy the puffin population is but really need comprehensive data.

In the UK, the puffin is a red-listed bird, meaning it is of the highest conservation concern. In 2018, 42, 474 breeding pairs of Atlantic puffins were counted on the Farne Islands. In 2019 it was 42, 378. Last year it was 36, 211—but that was in a reduced survey area.

The biggest threat to puffin populations around the world is the climate crisis.

Experts say they are struggling because of more frequent winter storms and greater stresses on food chains. The pandemic has also meant no rangers living on the islands and fewer visitors, which has meant gulls, one of the puffin's main predators(捕食者), have not been controlled as they usually would, worsening the situation than usual.

Visitors come to the Farne Islands in their thousands each year to see the abundance of bird life. The stars are surely the puffins. “They are always quarreling. Two will start having a quarrel and all the other ones come along to have a look”, said Dr. Richard Bevan, a zoologist at Newcastle University who helps to confirm the count. “Even as a scientist you do go:‘Ahh, they are so lovely.’”

24. Why are Reid and his team doing the count?

A. The pandemic struck the puffins heavily.

B. They want to know whether the puffins are fit.

C. A thorough statistic is necessary to support their idea.

D. The data will be used to determine the gulls to be killed.

25. What contributes to the puffin population decline during the pandemic?

A. No rangers care for birds.

B. More conflicts between birds.

C. The extreme climate on the island.

D. The increase of its natural enemies.

26. How does Dr. Richard Bevan find the puffins?

A. Brave.

B. Cruel.

C. Adorable.

D. Demanding.

27. Which can serve as the best title of the text?

A. Puffin population count starts again

B. Healthy food chains get out-of-order

C. Climate change endangers the puffins

D. Courageous rangers explore the island

C

For many of us, online shopping has made the process of purchasing goods a far simpler and more convenient process. No longer do we have to head to the shops to go through various objects. These days, we find the item we want or need online, click on it, and check out its description and user reviews. If it fits the bill, we send it to our basket and pay. There seems to be a wealth of options at our fingertips. But how do we know the options that pop up in front of us really are the best deals, and how might algorithms(算法)help or hold us back?

Algorithms, simply put, are mathematical instructions which tell a computer how to solve problems. When shopping is involved, what is the problem they solve? Well, they instruct a computer which advertisements to show and which products a user is most likely to buy. By analyzing the things we bought or looked at previously, algorithms can conjecture what goods we’re most likely to be attracted by.

For some people, the idea of something like guessing your preferences could sound a bit worrying. But first, let's look at the positives. By telling a computer to show us what we are interested in, it can not only save us a lot of time but also help us find the best deals. However, there are some people who have concerns about the impact of algorithms on our shopping experience. It is possible that algorithms may only select options from a limited number of brands, or may favor products from certain companies. There are also concerns that we aren't always shown the cheapest or best deal, even though that's what we're searching for.

So, the takeaway from this is that algorithms are here to stay, and it's wise to know they exist. Whenever you're shopping, be it online or off, make sure you shop around for the best items. The first thing you see might not always be the best for you.

28. What is the function of paragraph 1?

A. To show various shopping choices.

B. To introduce the concerning topic.

C. To teach people how to shop online.

D. To attract readers to online shopping.

29. What does the underlined word “conjecture” mean in paragraph 2?

A. Forgive.

B. Admit.

C. Predict.

D. Ignore.

30. Why are people worried about the impact of algorithms?

A. It may narrow their shopping choices.

B. It could involve them in plenty of research.

C. It could waste their time making decisions.

D. It may never recommend items to their taste.

31. What does the author think critical when purchasing?

A. Convenience.

B. Preference.

C. Price.

D. Quality.

Some students from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have completed a 1, 800-mile road trip in a van(客货车)powered only by the sun, saying their van Stella Vita is the world's first solar-powered mobile home.

With its solar panel roof, and wings that fold out with additional panels when parked, Stella Vita can travel up to 730 km within 24 hours and reach a speed of 75miles per hour on a sunny day. The students have doubled the solar surface to 17.5square meters, which generates enough energy to live and drive on.

With a roof that pops up when the van is not moving, you can do more things. There is a kitchen with a fridge, an eating area, a bed, a shower and a toilet. Stella Vita is actually a self-sustaining house on wheels. Through solar panels on the roof, it is independent of charging stations. But it does have an electric power charger in case of emergency.

In one year, the students succeeded in designing and building the mobile home and last month completed their demonstration road trip from Eindhoven to the southern tip of Spain. The driver and passengers can also track the amount of the energy used, and how much is remaining. “On a cloudy day, the vehicle can still produce 60-70%of the energy, ” said the team coordinator Dr. Carlo van de Weijer .“And even if there is no sun at all, you still have an efficient, normal electric car that you can charge from a charging port.”

This isn't the first solar vehicle made by the students. In their first year, they built a solar-powered family car called Stella. Since then there have been 3 more vehicles before this pop-up van. Stella and its successors Stella Lux, Stella Vie and the 5-seater Stella Era all raced in the World Solar Challenge in Australia and won in its Cruiser Class all four times when it was held in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

32. What can we know about the students' van trip?

A. It was environment-friendly.

B. It covered as long as 1, 800 km.

C. It promoted mobile home travel.

D. It started from the southern tip of Spain.

33. What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A. The drivers’ desire for the van.

B. The weather demand of the van.

C. The heat preservation in the van.

D. The power guarantee of the van.

34. Why is the van equipped with a charger?

A. To make use of charging ports on the way.

B. To save the solar energy in the van.

C. In case of a no-sun situation.

D. In case of mountainous road.

35. When might the 5-seater Stella Era win in its Cruiser Class?

A. In 2013.

B. In 2015.

C. In 2017.

D. In 2019.

Enjoy quality sleep. Those who do not get enough quality sleep are at a higher risk of heart attack. It is worthwhile to ensure at least seven hours of high-quality sleep every night.39Signs of this disorder include loud snoring, breathing stoppage

for short times during sleep, and so on. If you've been diagnosed and have been put on a treatment, it is important to take it seriously.

40 Many of the signs of heart disease go undetected until it becomes quite bad. Often, there is no accompanying sign of high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Knowing your numbers goes a long way in avoiding or treating heart disease and this includes your blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes screening, among other screenings.

A. Conduct regular health screenings.

B. Never let your stress level rise and fall at will.

C. You are always faced with many inviting diets.

D. Taking the stairs and walking your pets also help.

E. Physical inactivity comes at a high health and financial cost.

高三一模参考答案

第一部分听力

Text 1

W:The picture frame is broken. If it is not repaired, it would ruin the picture.

M:Why don't you ask Mr. Adams to take care of it?

Text 2

W:Hi, Martin. Did you have a great weekend?

M:Well, you know my brother Toby has been back for two weeks. He’d invited three of his old school friends and we did rock climbing and sailing. They are all cool people.

Text 3

W:Kim, you've always been a keen swimmer, haven't you?

M:Yes, that keeps me in good shape. Now, I've been invited to take part in a local competition.

Text 4

M:I really enjoyed the movie last night. Did you get home in time to see it?

W:Yes, but I wish I could have stayed awake long enough to see the whole movie. It was exciting, but I was so tired I fell asleep halfway through.

Text 5

W:So, do you have any idea when you'll have finished everything? For a project like this, those details should be finalized by now.

M:We had a meeting on making some changes to it. Per-haps we won't need to replace all the artwork. In that case, it’ll definitely be finished by the end of next week.

Text 6

M:Hi, Laura! What a surprise! Won't you come in?

W:Hi, Eric! And hello to you too, Mittens! Oh! Mittens is getting thin, isn't she?

M:Yes, I'm afraid so. She just isn't eating like she used to.

W:What are you feeding her?

M:Oh, you know, whatever cat food is on sale.

W:You should try Meow Chow. It's a little more expensive than the other brands, but cats love it because it tastes great!

M:OK, Laura. I'll give it a try!

Text 7

M:Karen, you look really upset. What's wrong?

W:I failed my road test again this morning. My driving instructor was really mad at me. I just want to give it up.

M:Don't lose heart, Karen. I remember I failed it twice, but my instructor was very patient. He practiced with me again and again. So what is your biggest problem?

W:Getting the car into the little parking space.

M:Well, if you like, I can recommend my instructor to you. I'm sure he can help you.

W:That's great. How can I get in touch with him?

M:Wait a moment. Let me give you his phone number.

Text 8

M:How's your new job going, Annie? It's with a software company, isn't it?

W:Yes. Well, I have to say I'm not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped. I thought I'd have plenty of freedom to develop new games, but the manager gives me a lot of unimportant work.

M:Mm, that's a shame.

W:Still, it’ll give me useful experience to put on my CV when I apply for a higher position, so I'm glad to take this job rather than the other one which offered a high salary.

M:What are the hours like?

W:We have to work 35 hours a week, but we can start and finish late if you want to. Most of my colleagues work four long days and finish at lunchtime on Fridays, so after that I often have the office to myself.

M:I wish I could have Friday afternoon off! It'd be great to have a longer weekend.

W:I don't go away at the weekend as often as you do.

M:That's true.

W:What do you think is the hardest part of doing projects?

M:Mm, deciding topics isn't too difficult. Then I have to search for material, interviewing people or doing exper-iments. After that, I have to write a report which I find quite hard.

W:What subjects do you study?

M:Well, a lot, like history, English and so on. Um, l didn't like biology at first, but now I am really inter-ested in it.

W:And what about when you finish your education?

M:I used to want to be a tennis player, but now I'll just go on playing for pleasure. I might go into film-making —I’d like to do something creative.

For thousands of years, dogs have buried their bones. The practice itself started long before dogs were even pets when they had to bury bones to survive. When dogs lived in the wild, sometimes food was scarce. If they were able to find food dogs became very protective of it. Sometimes they would have more bones than they could eat for one meal. To keep other dogs and animals from stealing their bones, dogs would bury them in the ground. When it was time for the next meal, they would dig up their bones and enjoy them again. This would continue until the bones were gone.
