Close your eyes, What does your dream hotel look like? Does it have chandeliers? Do the rooms have beds covered with rose petals? Do the bathrooms have jacuzzis? Are there breathtaking views from the balcony? Is the hotel made of brick? Marble? Ice? Ice sounds a bit ridiculous, but a hotel made of ice is actually a reality.

Sweden’s Icehotel is the latest cool hotel in town, and it really is made of ice. So, how did this idea come about? It all started in 1990. A French artist held the opening of his exhibition in a man-made igloo on the frozen Tome River- home of the Icehotel. The igloo was named “Arctic Hall” and attracted many visitors. Amongst these visitors was a brave group of adventurers who used the igloo as their accommodation. This act of bravery, (or madness, depending on your perspective)inspired the construction of the Icehotel.

Situated 200 km above the Arctic Circle, the hotel is only open during the winter months. Why? Because the ice starts to melt in the spring time. This means that the hotel is built from scratch every year. As soon as winter begins, architects, ice sculptors and artists meet in Sweden’s Lapland to build this beautiful creation.

But does this hotel have any of the facilities you find in a regular hotel? Well, actually, yes. In fact, the ice hotel seems to have everything: the famous “Absolute IceBar”, an ice art exhibition and a cinema. It even has an ice sauna and spa to keep you warm. And, of course, you can enjoy the natural habitat that surrounds the hotel, There is a snowmobile safari which takes you across the snowfields. And if you’re feeling brave, you can drive the snowmobile yourself.

The Icehotel is a real find. And, it’s not impossible to get to, either. There are flights and trains every da y. If you’re travelling from London, it will take you only three and a half hours to get there. So, what are you waiting for? Just make sure you wrap up warm and take a thermal sleeping bag.

I reached into the closet to unfasten the Belleek porcelain(瓷器) flower pinned to a red coat. From a navy blue jacket, I removed a dark green feather pin. I detached a sparkling diamond from the collar of a black jacket.

Every coat and jacket of my mother was decorated with complementary jewelry. I was breaking up time-honored pairings because I had to, because she died one recent evening when she sat down to rest and never got up. So it was perfectly understandable that I put in my pocket the porcelain flower my father had sent her from boot camp when he was a young World War I Marine in Paris Island, South Carolina, but I still felt like a thief, stealing bits and pieces of my mother’s life.

Like thieves, my sister Ellen and I were going through her private items. The treasures before me include surprises, like a lock of hair from my first haircut; my daughter’s poem to her grandmother; the notes from friends and family, including a love note to Dad in a Father’s Day card she sent him. Ah, love notes.

I once mentioned the letters between her and my father when he served in the South Pacific. They wrote to each other daily for three years, without missing a day. “Oh, I destroyed them, ”she said as she casually poured herself a cup of tea. “How could you do that?” Tasked. My mother looked at me directly and unapologetically said, “They were not your letters but mine. They were for me alone, no one else, so I destroyed them.” Gone! Just like that! What was in them? I wondered

And yet, as I reached through her clothes, books, photos, the many possessions of a long life, I can see her point, She had a right to keep something of herself from the rest of us. Even though I wish she hadn’t, she possessed and protected her very private feelings in her own inner safe.

Take everything else, she said in effect, but not those.

It’s hard not to crack a smile when you’re faced with the tail-wagging, constantly smiling Kit-Cat Clock, which is kind of the reason it first came to be.

In the 1930s, America was in the thick of the hopeless and gloomy Great Depression, and across the country people were in low spirits. Powerless to the crisis on a larger scale, Oregon designer Earl Arnault designed a way to bring a glimmer of joy to the people around him; the Kit-Cat Clock. He conceived the feline(猫科的)—themed product in early 1932—tricky eyes, black wagging tail and all—but it wasn’t until the end of the decade when the depression began to lift that production of the clocks officially began.

Originally, the smiling Kit-Cat Clock were made entirely from metal, but as the popularity of manufacturing with plastic grew, the Kit-Cat Clock soon followed suit. Two forepaws and a bow tie were added in the 1950s, and the wagging tail was made a little bit fashionable. Aside from these minor changes, however, the design remained largely unchanged from the time of its birth. Sadly, in the 1980s the Kit-Cat Clock nearly went kaput—with motor manufacturing relocated offshore and batteries still in their infancy(幼儿期), it was difficult to keep the clock’s many parts

moving. So, it was up to the makers to come up with a solution: a brand new, powerful piece of battery technology. With the Kit-Cat Clock free to tick away another day, different colour options and sizes, and a lady version were eventually introduced, too.

Affordable Hearing Aid

A local board-certified Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physician, Dt. S. Cherukuri, has shaken up the hearing aid industry with the invention of a medical-grade, affordable hearing aid. This revolutionary hearing aid is designed to help millions of people with hearing loss who cannot afford—or do not wish to pay-the much higher cost of traditional hearing aids. Dr. Cherukuri knew that untreated hearing loss could lead to depression, social isolation, anxiety, and symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s disease. He didn’t understand why the cost for hearing aids was so high when the prices on many consumer electronics like TVs, DVD players, and cell phones had fallen.

The high cost of hearing aids is a result of layers of middlemen and expensive unnecessary features. Dr. Cherukuri concluded that it would be possible to develop a medical grade hearing aid without sacrificing the quality of components. The result is the MDHearingAid PRO,well

Free education and health care are surely among the reasons why Norway became the happiest country in the world according to the 2017 World Happiness Report, but researchers add one more reason to Norwegian’s good cheer - one single word.

The word is “dugnad” and it means “to do community work”. Before you rush out to help an elderly neighbor cross the street or walk dogs at your local shelter, you need to know that dugnad is not directly translated to traditional volunteerism, although the work of a dugnad is voluntary.

Deeply rooted in the country’s culture, dugnad is different from daily charitable work.It

describes times when community members come together to contribute their skills toward the goal of making a certain place better. This could be through repairing, building, cleaning, gardening, or painting. Norwegian law doesn’t force people to attend dugnad events, but dugnad is regarded as an important part of neighborhoods, organizations and workplaces. It needs strength from many people. So everyone is expected to participate in the activity.

Dugnad is a part of the national spirit. It has a cultural root that supports Norwegian values of generosity and public care. Dugnad improves relationships and holds a nation together. If you’re encouraged to try it yourself and to bring the spirit of dugnad to your area, you need to remember the goal is to help keep the country happy. Instead of hosting a sale to buy new uniforms for a team, think of having a party to repair the old uniforms.

Don’t worry if you don’t own any painting supplies or aren’t sure how to garden. Not all of us are the outdoor spring-cleaning type, but you can still help by showing up to a charitable community event with water, coffee, or baked goods in hand. Public food plays a big role in the dugnad. A shared meal in the act of helping one another can bring us closer to neighbors, co-wo rkers, or fellow parents at our child’s school.

(For more information, please click https: //https://www.wendangku.net/doc/655143244.html,/wiki/Communal_work#Dugnad.)

12. What is the final aim of dugnad?

A. To make people rich

B. To make the country strong.

C. To make Norwegians cheerful.

D. To make more children healthy.

13. Where can you possibly read this passage?

A. In the newspaper.

B. On the travel brochure.

C. In the textbook.

D. On the Internet.

14. What are we expected to do when bringing the spirit of dugnad to our area?

A. Hold more parties.

B. Do helpful and practical work.

C. Raise as much money as possible.

D. Learn to do what we’re not good at.

15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Dugnad needs all to join in.

B. Dugnad makes a difference.

C. Dugnad is not hard to carry out.

D. Dugnad does good to our health.

The home of the future won’t look like the house in The Jetsons. It won’t be equipped with a flying car or a robot servant. While it will use clean-energy technologies that the cartoon’s creators couldn’t have imagined, it will be made largely from wood and used materials, like recycled cement and carpet.

“We can build net-zero buildings,” said Elizabeth Beardsley from the U.S. Green Building Council. In the 2017 UN Climate Change Conference, Beardsley pressed the case to make all buildings produce at least as much energy as they use by 2050.

Buildings cause pollution mainly in two ways. One is from power use. Residential (住宅的) and commercial buildings account for 70 percent of power consumed in the United States —electricity that largely comes from burning coal and natural gas. The second way is in the use of materials like steel and concrete.

To cut power use, Beardsley said that homeowners and building managers can choose LED lights, produce electricity from solar panels and use smart water heaters and air conditioners to store that clean energy. She described other technologies, like windows that automatically change colors when rooms get too warm, saving energy on air conditioning while keeping homes comfortable. “Lighting manufacturers have developed systems that use sensors (传感器) to know when you,re there and when you’re active.” Beardsley said, “These are also getting cheaper and cheaper.”

“For building products, there’s been a growing interest —still quite new —in the environmental influences of the products.” Beardsley said, “How long does it last? Is it going to be replaced soon?” She added, “Now there are new products that will take in carbon.” Producers are looking to construct large buildings out of wood.

Even in wood buildings, designers use concrete and steel. Some scientists are working to reduce the carbon footprint of these basic materials. “All of the recycling efforts to date have led to new ideas and new products.” Beardsley said. Producers are also looking to use other materials from recycled goods, such as carpet from old plastic bottles. It may be that the homes of the future will be made from unwanted wood, metal, cardboard and plastic.

Are you tired of being left out while your so-called helper is just hanging out? Personally, it’s quite annoying.

During a sixth-grade group project, my partner and had to plan and budget for a trip to Australia. In the beginning, he promised to do half of the work. I had just gone on and assumed he would keep his word, but unfortunately, the day before it was due, he told me he hadn’t done a thing. So all that night, I had to finish my half, as well as his. This was when I realized we couldn’t rely on anyone. I relied on him, but he dropped the ball.

You’d think that by now I would have learned fr om my previous experience, but no. Every year we have a band competition called solo (独奏) and ensemble (合奏). (This is a competition where you play a solo for several judges and they give you advice.) I had participated for the past two years and was eager to do it again. When the teacher asked me if I wanted to do it, I answered without hesitation. A week later, a list of names came out, giving Urination to individuals. At the end of the list, my name had not been called. So I raised my hand to ask about the mistake when she asked if I really wanted to go. This really led me to feel betrayed.

People aren’t always able to be relied on. Mostly you can only trust yourself to carry out what you want to do.

A. Never make the same mistake twice in your life.

B. Always get fully prepared for an important event.

C. Don’t depend on others for things you want to do.

D. You’d better not trust your classmates and teachers.

9.A start-up company in California, called Zume, is testing machines that make pizza. The robot takes and shapes dough to create the base of the pizza. It then adds tomato sauce, cheese, meat or other toppings. Next, the robot places the uncooked pizza into a hot oven. A few minutes later, the pizza is ready. The pizza comes out the same each time. Zume says the robots work quickly and do not get sick. The robots do not get paid either.

Julia Collins is the company’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO). Her business can spend money on better food products because it does not have to pay the robots. Zume is using robots to make pizza.

Charity Suzuki has bought the robot-made pizza. She likes its taste. “It’s delicious. It’s always hot and fresh when it comes. I mean it’s great that they’re making it, but I can’t tell the differ ence that it’s made by a robot versus a human.”

The companies say they are developing robots so people can get higher quality food faster. But what about the jobs the robots are taking from humans?

Ken Goldberg is a professor at the University of California in Berkeley. He also directs the school’s automation laboratory. Goldberg said researchers have been working with robots for 50 years. He said that, while there has been progress, the jobs are not going to disappear right away. “I want to reassure restaurant workers that the skills that they have are still going to be of value,” Goldberg said.

“We’re going to get rid of boring, repetitive, dangerous jobs and we’re going to free up people to do things that have higher value. There’s going to be amazing new ways of working that don’t exist yet that are going to be created.”

10.Three divers enter a hole leading to a water-filled cave on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. They swim for an hour. Finally, they reach a large room 60 feet underground and about the size of two basketball courts. Here, they discover an upside-down huma n skull (the bones of a person’s head). Other bones lay nearby.

The team came across the skull in 2007. The divers then told the Mexican government about the finding. Soon the government formed a team of scientists to look into it. The group, which included archaeologist (考古学家) Dominique Rissolo, believed that the skull belonged to someone who lived in the last ice age. At the ice age’s height some twenty thousand years ago, sea levels dropped and new land appeared. Over time, rain and wind ate holes into some of the land.

“The person may have died after entering the cave,” Rissolo says. Then, when the ice age ended some ten thousand years ago, sea levels rose. Water flooded the cave, covering the remains.

Worrying that moving the skull might destroy it, scientists decided to examine it at its watery resting place. They collected information about the skull and other pieces of bones. They found that the bones belonged to a 15- to 17-year-old girl who lived at least twelve thousand years ago. The team named her Naia after some sea creatures in Greek myths.

Naia is the oldest nearly complete human skeleton (骨架) ever found in the Americas. DNA

tests showed that she’s a direct ancestor of present-day Native Americans. Naia’s DNA also matches with people native to Siberia, a part of Russia. Scientists have long thought that ancient people from this area arrived in Alaska during the last ice age. They were the first humans to live in the Americas. And Naia proves how far south they went. (Mexico is a country to the south of the US.)

In 2014 the scientists decided to bring up Naia’s skull from the cave to protect it from curious divers. So it was taken to a lab, where it remains today.

8. What do we learn about the skull?

A. It was left alone in the cave,

B. It lay under a basketball court*

C. It drew the government’s attention.

D. It was discovered by three scientists.

9. When did Naia probably live?

A. After the last ice age ended.

B. Before the last ice age ended.

C. Before the last ice age started.

D. At the beginning of the last ice age.

10. Why was the skull studied in the cave for several years?

A. Scientists tried to protect it.

B. The temperature was fine in there.

C. It was against the law to take it out.

D. It would help scientists study the cave,

11. Who were Naia’s distant ancestors?

A. Early humans in Greece.

B. Early humans in Siberia.

C. Early humans in Alaska.

D. Early humans in Mexico.

Internet communication is having a positive influence on education in and out of the classroom. The Internet provides the opportunity for people anywhere in the world to access quality educational services from the comfort of their home. The Internet allows you to have access to educational opportunities on your schedule, and at your own pace.

Classroom usage of computers in the United States began in the early 1980s, with applications limited to software packages that provided drill and practice by students. By the early 1990s, most classrooms in the United States had a computer the teacher could use to aid in the presentation of academic material. By the late 1990s Internet usage became widespread,

becoming a significant factor in classroom instruction. The late 1990s also saw the rise of Internet based post-secondary educational programs that allow students to earn a college degree without attending a class in a traditional institution.

Internet usage opens the entire world of information and communication to students. Students can access libraries from any city of the world at any time day or night. Students can have 24 hour access to all materials needed to complete an assignment.

Students using computer technology and communication tools to research, develop and publish school projects develop critical thinking skills that are essential in decision making processes. Teachers need to equip students with a new set of skills which will enable them to locate, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize the vast amounts of information available. Students must become information managers.

Students who learn to use computers and the Internet proficiently (熟练地) develop competencies that are required in the 21st century workplace. Internet usage allows students and workers to communicate efficiently, increasing productively and facilitating creative thinking. The pace of technological change is forcing students to continue learning new skills and responsibilities. The reality of rapid change will challenge established instructional methods, and will transform schools into technological training centers.

4. What can computer technology and communication tools benefit students?

A. Entering libraries freely.

B. Making essential decisions.

C. Being information managers.

D. Gaining important thinking skills.

5. What makes students pursue new skills continuously?

A. The high pace of modem society.

B. The rapid change of technology.

C. The tendency of classroom teaching.

D. The development of teaching methods.

6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “competencies”?

A. Abilities.

B. Positions.

C. Competitions.

D. Wages.

7. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The influence of the Internet on education

B. How to improve classroom teaching online?

C. The relationship between Internet and education

D. Why Internet communication is so important?

Today’s teens and tweens have built up an impressive amount of daily screen time. Figures put it at between six to eight hours a day for 11-15 year-olds, and that’s not includi ng time spent on a computer for homework. In fact, even the average UK adult spends more time looking at a screen than they do sleeping, according to one analysis.

As starts early, a third of UK children have access to a tablet(平板) before they are four. It’s no surprise, then, that today’s youngest generations will be exposed to (and no-doubt join) the social networks their elders already use. Snapchat, for instance, is extremely popular among teens. One December 2017 survey found that 70% of US teens aged 13-18 use it. Most of those questioned also have an Instagram account. Figures are similar in the UK.

Over three billion of us are now registered on a social network, many of us on more than one. We spend a lot of time there. US adults spend an average of 2-3 hours a day. This trend is now exposing some worrying results and staying hot on the heels of social-media’s popularity. Therefore, researchers are interested in the impact on many aspects of our health, including sleep, the importance of which is currently gaining unprecedented attention.

We’re now coming to realize that social media has some clearly negative effects on our sleep and our mental health. To fight any disadvantages of social media use, it’s clear that moderation(节制) is key. Sigman says we should distance ourselves from our screens throughout the day, and do the same for children.

(1) 1 Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry.

The Model T Ford was built at the Piquette Plant in Michigan a century ago, with the first rolling off the assembly line(装配线) on September 27,1908.Only eleven cars were produced the next month. But eventually Henry Ford would build fifteen million of them. Modern America was born on the road, behind a wheel. The car shaped some of the most lasting aspects o f American culture: the roadside diner, the billboard, the motel, even the hamburger. For most of the last century, the car represented what it meant to be American—going forward at high speed to find new worlds. The road novel, the road movie, these are the most typical American ideas, born of abundant petrol, cheap cars and a never-ending interstate highway system, the largest public works project in history. pot and In 1928 Herbert Hoover imagined an America with“ a chicken in every a car in every garage.” Since then, this society has moved onward, never looking back, as the car transformed America from a farm-based society into an industrial power.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life. (3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville? A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A

For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she’s been named national teacher of the year. Principal Waynes Kettler said he’s worked with many outstanding teachers in his22years as an educator, but Peterson is“just that one step above anybody I’ve ever worked with before.” Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music. When students were reading S.E.Hinton’s novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused no race, equality and social justice, the themes of the book.Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book.

Here are six steps to better studying. Pay attention in class Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Tell your teacher or parents about any problem that is preventing you from paying attention. Take good notes Write down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the board. Try to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It's a good idea to keep your notes organized by subject. Plan ahead for tests and projects Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday's test will make it hard to do your best. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn't happen is to plan ahead. Write down your test dates. You can then plan how much to do after school each day, and how much time to spend on each topic. Break it up When there's a lot to study, it can help to break things into several parts. Let's say you have a spelling test on 20 words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word groups and work on one or two different groups each night. Ask for help You can't study effectively if you don't understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher for help. If you're at home when the confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help. Sleep tight So the test is tomorrow and you've followed your study plan—but suddenly you can't remember anything! Don't panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you've given it. Try to get a good night's sleep and you'll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning. (1)We know from the passage that a loud person is ________. A. a student who always answers questions loudly in class B. someone who likes to talk with others in a loud voice C. a student who likes speaking with others in class D. a person who makes a lot of noise in public places (2)If you don't understand what you have learnt, you can ________. A. read your notes over and over again B. turn to people around you for help C. put aside the material for later review D. ask your teacher to explain it the next day (3)By saying “Sleep tight”, what does the author mean?

I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide. As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school. Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God. (1)How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school? A. Through his father's friend's help. B. Through his own efforts to exams. C. Through his father's request. D. Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence. (2)Why did the author's parents put him into an English school? A. An English school was more influential. B. Foreign trade with China was developing fast. C. It met with Chinese public opinion. D. He could become a successful interpreter. (3)What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school? A. It was skeptical. B. It was mysterious. C. It was thoughtful. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school”可知,作者是通过父亲朋友的帮助进入到Mrs.
