Five boys are suspected of starting a fire that destroyed their school on the eve of the new term.

Pupils were faced with the probability of coursework having been destroyed in the big fire at Leyland St Mary’s Catholic Technology College in Lancashire.

Plans were being drawn up to provide alternative classrooms for 730 children, with parents warned to keep them at home for at least the rest of the week.

The 1950s science bloc k was reduced to broken stones in Sunday’s blaze, which created clouds of smoke visible for miles. Sources said the library and sports hall were also damaged beyond repair.

Strong winds and a shortage of water hampered (prevented) 125 firemen trying to bring it under control.

Police said yesterday that five boys – one aged 11, two 12-year-olds, one aged 13 and one 15 –arrested on suspicion of starting the fire had been released on bail(保释) until later this month. Parents said the suspects all attended St M ary’s.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene until late this afternoon. Staff were due to attend the school yesterday for an inset day, and pupils were to return for lessons after the holidays today.

St Mary’s head teacher Kathy McNicholas fought back the tears as she watched her school go up in flames last night.

She said: ‘This is so upsetting to watch. It’s heart-breaking. It’s very distressing for the staff and for the children. Everyone had been looking forward to coming back for the new school year. Finding somewhere for around 730 children won’t be easy. A few of the staff have turned up to see if there is anything they can do and they have all been shocked and saddened by what has happened. Local authorities have stepped in to stabilize the market, too. As well, state-owned salt companies have been urged to increase their supply.

Facing expanding market demand, distribution centers have taken extra measures to ensure they are well-prepared.

London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around

central London.

So how does it work？First you have to sign up to the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes，which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go，for the length of time you use the bike.

Transport for London，which runs the scheme，are hoping to have 6，000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion (拥挤)in London and is expected to create up to 40，000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor oris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been “filled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses”.

However，there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn’t dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few “teething problems” and have said they wouldn’t charge for the first day as a “gesture of goodwill”. Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While

people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.

In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

Are Training Classes or Tutors Necessary

Some of us think it necessary to do so. Firstly, it's more effective to study with a teacher's help than by themselves. Secondly, you can make up for what you miss or fail to understand in class on weekdays. Besides, you can have more chances and time to communicate with teachers.

However, others don’t think so. For one thing, students can easily develop the habit of dependence, causing some students not to listen attentively in their regular classes. For another, students need time for rest and recreation at weekends. What's worse, attending training classes means costing us much money.

In my opinion, whether a training class or a tutor is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a subject, maybe it's necessary for you. But be sure to choose a suitable class or teacher, otherwise, it would be a waste of time and money.

高二英语期中考试试卷分析一、试卷总体情况分析本次期中考试试卷主要考查英语模块3所学内容，试卷总分150分。试题内容丰富，知识覆盖面广，题型较多，包括听力、完形填空、阅读理解、语法填空、短文改错和作文，和高考题型保持一致。考点知识既源于教材，又聚焦高考，全面考查了学生读、写等方面的能力。试卷以新课程理念为指导，既关注高考，又强调知识与能力并重。总体而言，试卷难度稍微偏大了点，下面以我校英语考试为抽样分析样本，对本次试卷做一个简要的分析。二、学生各项题型得分情况及主要失分点分析（一）试卷各大题得分情况统计（如下表）：从表中的数据看，阅读得分相对好一点，但也不是很理想，所以我们平时要重视基础知识；而完形填空、阅读理解这两项综合运用题的得分不高，高一学生语篇语境理解的能力较弱，综合运用能力差在

意料之中，虽然客观上这两项的难度的确大了些，但我们在教学中仍不可忽视这一点，即要在立足课本的同时，应重视学生的课外阅读。短文改错和作文得分一般，这提醒老师在教学中仍要加强课外阅读指导和训练，加强作文和短文改错的训练。（二）各大题主要失分点及其原因分析：第一部分：听力听力既与学生所学教材紧密联系，又聚焦高考，与高考题型保持一致。听力语速较慢难度不大，但得分率不算高。本项失分较多的题目分别为：第3、5、6题，其中3、6题得分率最低。第二部分：阅读本次阅读理解包括四篇短文，一篇七选五，体裁涉及议论文和记叙文，所选文章具有一定的思想性和可读性，事实细节题、推理判断题和主旨大意题等各种题型均有涉及，注重考查学生的阅读理解能力。其中16、23、26题得分率比较低。第三部分：完型填空完形填空主要考查学生在阅读理解的基础上对语篇、语法和词汇知识的掌握情况，要求学生能够综合运用所学的词汇、语法等知识选出最佳选项，是综合性能力比较强的题型，也是学生难得高分的题型。本篇完形填空选用的夹叙夹议文体，选材精当，内容感人，问题设置非常巧妙。主要考查了三种能力：阅读理解能力；利用上下文线索进行分析和推理的能力；学生语言基础知识的运用能力。总的来说，材料偏难，达不到锻炼的效果。难题占了一半以上，其中41、42、47、50最难。第四部分：语法填空与短文改错这两道题考场学生的综合能力，难度较大，也是高考的难点与易错点。得分率非常的低。学生对一些语法点和语言点掌握的不牢固，需要不断加强训练，总结答题技巧。第五部分：写作和书面表达本次作文不是很好写，尤其对于刚上高中的学生来说更是很难，甚至出现了很多0分现象。在评卷的过程中我们还发现下面所存在的
