Description:

The National Gallery is the British national art museum built on the north side of Trafalgar Square in London. It houses a diverse collection of more than 2,300 examples of European art ranging from

For the first time in the history of the Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou marathons, fourteen blind runners competed in the Nov 6 Hangzhou Marathon this year with the assistance of personal guides. Each runner was supported by 4 or 5 volunteers. Among them was Yan Wei, from a running group call ed “R unning in the Dark”, which specially provides training for blind runners.

During trainings, blind runners are each accompanied by three volunteers. One volunteer is responsible for removing any obstacles(障碍物)on the road and controlling the pace. The second

year when he took part in a guided running activity. Zhu said that he was so fascinated with the sport that he even bought a treadmill(跑步机)so that he could train at hom e. “Runn ing gives me the chance

to be outside and take in the fresh air. The activity has also made me more willing to talk to people. It’s simply good for healt h, ” said Zhu.

The popularity of guided running activities for blind people has been growing since last year. Cheng Yi, a volunteer at Running in the Dark’s Hangzhou branch, said that both the numbers of blind runners and volunteers to become assistants to them are rising continually. However, he added that volunteers face a more physically demanding task compared to a regular runner. Some of the other challenges involve being aware of the verbal(口头的) instructions one gives.

“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a

salesgirl at the supermarket

who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone with a fixed

procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and

everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Some- times it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you

know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t

know what to say. “Oh, you just had a tooth out I’m terribly sorry, but have a

nice day.”

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day”to you, you may find it

heart-warming, because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom

at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little

uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless

others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a

strange and comfortable way, it’s nice to know they care enough to pretend they

care when they really don’t care all that much. While the expression may not often

they like.

Protect Children from Cyber-

bullying

When you think about bullying, you might think of a child being bullied by another in the schoolyard. As more young people have access to computers and cell phones, traditional bullying has

gone digital, which has not yet gained awareness in Chinese parents.

Cyber-bullying, first invented by Canadian educator Bill Belsey, is the use of the Internet and related technologies to harm other people, in an intentional, repeated, and unfriendly manner. It involves threatening text messages, the spread of online rumors on social networking sites, and intentionally keeping someone out of an online group. Cyber-bullying is at an all-time high in the US. According to a study from the US Department of Justice, more than 43% of teenagers report being

victims(受害者)of cyber-bullying.

Compared to face-to-face bullying, cyber-bullying is considered to have a worse emotional effect on the victims, and kids could feel more desperate and depressed. Severe, long-term or frequent cyber-bullying can leave victims at greater risk for anxiety, depression, and other disorders. Research says that cyber-bullying victims were almost twice as likely to have attempted suicide compared to youths who had not experienced it.

In traditional schoolyard bullying, at least home is a safe place for the victims. But cyber-bullying is endless---it could happen anytime. Moreover, in the digital world, bullying is much easier, as a bully can pick on people with a much lower risk of being caught.

Actually, cyber-bullying has become a worldwide issue. In the US, as several teens committed suicide because of cyber-bullying, some schools set rules to punish cyberbullies. Laws to punish cyber-bullying have been introduced in some states. In China, cyber-bullying is still considered by many parents and educators as a problem that involves physical contact. However, as cell phones and laptops are becoming common equipment for teenagers, social interactions have increasingly moved from personal contact to virtual contact. Cyber-bullying is spreading faster than expected.

For schools and parents, safety rules should be set in the virtual world for kids, such as telling them not to let out anything to a stranger. Active steps should be taken to make the public aware of the seriousness of this problem, because it would be too late to take measures after tragedy strikes.
