One evening in February xx,a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That’s when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line.Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometer down the railway tracks.

Ceely’s near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device(导航仪).She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily.Ceely was relying on her GPS,but it made no mention of the crossing.“I put my plete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,”she told the BBC.

Who is to blame here?Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s story in his book When Machines Fail Us,points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices,he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are fille d with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices:Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless key-boards.

The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes.A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map.Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention.Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signalling system.Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say.

It’s a problem that runs through the book.In a section on cars,Stevenson gives an account of the ad vanced techniques that criminals use to defeat puter-based locking systems for cars.He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft;both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable.Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets.Or changing social circumstances.Or some bination of these factors.

The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and plex.It is shaped

by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in.Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology.

If there is such a way,it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortings of our machines. After all,we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.

The term “healthy obesity” has gained value over the past 15 years, but scientists have recently questioned its very existence.“Our new findings suggest that health measures may be necessary for all obese(肥胖的) individuals, even those previously considered to be metabolically(代谢的) healthy,” says study first author Mikael,“Since obesity is the major driver changing gene expression in fat cells,we sho uld continue to focus on preventing obesity.”

Obesity has been a global problem, affecting approximately 600 million people worldwide and increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and so on.But in the 1970s and 80s,experts began to question the extent to which obesity increases the risk for these https://www.wendangku.net/doc/a31155655.html,ter studies in the late 90s and early xxs showed that some obese people show a relatively healthy life.

However, there are no accepted measures for measuring metabolically healthy obesity, and whe ther or not such a thing exists is now up for discussion.“Our study suggests that the idea of metabolically healthy obesity may be more difficult than thought,” Mikael says,“There doesn’t appear to be a clear line that separates obese subjects with high or low insulin(胰岛素) sensitivity, indicating that obesity is the major driver explaining the changes in gene expression.”

One limitation of the study is that it examined gene expression only in white fat cells, not other types. Moreover, all of the obese subjects were scheduled to experience obesity operations,so the findings may only apply to people with severe obesity. In future research,Mikael and his group will track the study patients after surgery to determine whether weight loss normalizes gene expression responses. They will also look for specific genes linked to improved metabolic health in these people.

In the meantime, the study has an important take-home message.“Obese people may not be as metabolically healthy as previously believed,” Ryden says.

We eat in our cars,at our desks,on the go,and in front of the TV.We eat take-out,packaged and prepared meals. Why?Because it fits our not-enough-time-in-the-day lifestyles. 9 Well,I’m certainly not the first one to think it—or say it—but we all need to slow down.

Consumer trends around the globe show that over the past three decades people are purchasing more prepared foods at the grocery and eating out more than ever before. It’s predicted that we’ll spend more at restaurants in the ing years. 10 However,we’re getting less healthy.

While debates can be seen in different media over the food industry’s contribution to our growing waistlines and our health problems, the bottom line is this: 11 We can choose to eat a fast-food lun ch on the go.We can throw a frozen meal in the microwave and call it

dinner. We can eat without thinking,in front of the tube,at our puters, and while driving a car.

12 Studies have shown meaningful links between family meals and kids’ mental and physical well-being.Eating sensibly doesn’t take much time or money, but it does require you to make a conscious decision to do so.Wrapped in endless work, appointments and social activities,we often fail to enjoy a relaxing meal with our families.

While it can be a challenge to always put healthy eating first, just do your best.Remember that the food you eat has a more significant impact on your health, weight and well-being than almost any other activity you do.13 Every meal made at home—even just once or twice a week—is a step closer to a healthier body and a slower food lifestyle.

A.Lunch is the biggest calorie intake when it es to eating out.

B.Treat it with the importance that it deserves, but start small.

C.Our food matches our lives.

D.Purchase food locally and skip as many packaged items as you can.

E.What we eat, where we eat and how we eat are all under our control.

F.We’re consuming an increasing number of calories.

G.We can devote an hour of the day to enjoying a meal with our families.

Another special feature of this bookstore is that each book only costs three dollars. All the expenses are paid on the honor system, which means buyers should make a note of what they’ve bought and leave their money by themselves. So the tools of the trade in this bookstore are quite simple:pens, papers, light bulbs and a label-maker.

In order to catch passers-by’s attention, the billboards(广告牌) of the bookstore are several times bigger than the store itself. With these large eye-catchers,many people are willing to stop by and have a visit.

1、You can remember the face, but can‘t put a name to it. Many of us have been caught in this embarrassing situation. But researchers say it is often easier to remember someone's name than what they look like. Twenty-four volunteers were shown 40 pictures of strangers, paired with random(随机的) names. They were given time to memorize the faces and names before being tested on which they thought they had seen before. The participants could remember up to 85 per cent of the names but only 73 per cent of the faces. When they were shown a different picture of the same person, the participants could recall only 64 per cent of faces, according to the study, led by the University of York. That may be because faces are only recognized visually, while names can be both spoken and written down so appear in our visual and audio memory. When people were shown famous people, they also remembered their names more accurately than their photographs. Co-author Dr Rob Jenkins, from the university's psychology department, said, "Our study suggests that, while many people may be bad at remembering names, they are likely to be even worse at remembering faces. This will surprise many people as it is against our initial understanding. Our life experiences with names and faces have misled us about how our minds work." Remembering names gets harder with age, leading to many uncomfortable moments for middle-aged people when they run into acquaintances. But to study whether names are harder to recall than faces, the researchers, whose findings are published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, used a “fair test” where the participants were presented with strangers’ names and faces. 1.What can we know according to the research in Paragraph 3? A.It is certain that names are harder to recall than faces. B.Remembering names is more easily than remembering faces.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. While faking and fierce looks are among animals great defenses, many species know that everyone runs from a big stink (臭气) too. Vulture (秃鸳) Vultures, are street sweepers that feast on the rotting flesh of dead animals, which benefits us by ridding our highways and landscapes of animal bodies and the bacteria they might carry. When vultures feel threatened they vomit, and the smell of vomited-on dead bodies puts of most predators. Throwing up allows the vulture to fly away more quickly-and the vomit can hurt the aggressor's eyes and face. Opossum (负鼠) In some ways opossums have it easy. In order to become "dead", they don't have to fax anyone a death certificate. They just lie there with their tongues hanging out with the smell of dead flesh, sometimes for hours, effectively convincing potential predators they can find a much fresher meal elsewhere. Even if they keep getting attacked, they won't move any more than a human statue until the threat has passed. Hoatzin (磨雉) Hold your nose and meet the hoatzin, a bird of distinctions, not the least of which is that it smells like fresh cow shit. The animal mostly eats leaves and it's the only bird known to digest by fermentation, like a cow. This process is what causes its smell and has earned it the nickname the "stink bird Millipedes (千足虫) Millipedes are tricky. For starters they look wormy. Their name is deceptive, too: Their legs number about 750. Their major defense is to curl up into a ball. They, though, also release a harm eyes, and leave a horrible smell on their attackers. Sea Hare (海兔) The graceful sea hare is plain in taste in the first place, so it's not the most popular dish in the seafood chain. Nonetheless this type of sea creature has a pretty creative smell-related defense that is almost the opposite of its smelly companions on this list. The sea hare gives out a slimy, purple ink, the substance which makes food less palatable to predators. Researchers using lobsters (2-f) as model predators found that the sea blocks the lobsters receptive mechanism. In other words, the sea hare gives its attacker the equivalent of a stuffy nose so they don't know how appealing it is. (1)The sea hare defends itself from predators by ________. A. becoming plain in taste at the discovery of a predator B. giving out purple ink to make itself invisible to predators C. releasing substance to make predators unable to smell it D. giving off smelly gas to try to drive predators away

Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands and captures moments entirely on its own! What sets this roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness apart is that it is specially intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone. The Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. "Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it'll try to get nice photos of those faces," said Juston Payne, the device's product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved "training it to know what happiness looks like". The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child's hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse. The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing. Concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted, but he said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet. "This product is only possible because of the way that silicon(硅) has advanced," Payne said that now they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we're likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.(1)What is the most outstanding feature of Clips? A.It enables easy Internet access. B.It is equipped with tough glass. C.It can be worn on your clothing. D.It allows of hands-free photography. (2)What does the underlined word "candid" in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Awkward. B.Brief. C.Touching. D.Unforgettable. (3)What makes Clips a reality according to Juston Payne? A.The advance in technology. B.The popularity of the Internet. C.The screen for viewing and editing. D.The rise of the smartphone industry. (4)What does the text mainly talk about? A.New gadgets in the age of apps.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

The US team say the results, published in Nature, are "striking" and should encourage research efforts. Tests in humans could begin in months. But even if these go well, a licensed vaccine for widespread use to protect those at most risk -such as pregnant women -would still be years away, experts advise. Zika has been spreading across Central and South America and, most recently, Africa. More than 60 countries and territories now have continuing transmission(传播) of the disease, which is carried by mosquitoes. The virus causes serious birth damages during pregnancy and has been declared a global public health emergency. Now, developing a vaccine for pregnant women to protect their unborn babies is an international research priority(优先事项). US scientists from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School tested two types of Zika vaccine in mice – one based on bits of genetic(基因的) code from the virus and another that is an inactive (and therefore harmless) copy of Zika. Both worked well, protecting every mouse that was immunised against the virus. In comparison, all of the mice not given the vaccine caught Zika after they were exposed to it. Researchers say they will push ahead with developing the needed virus vaccine. There are many existing vaccines for other disease that use this type of technology, while there are relatively few DNA-based vaccines. Of course, future tests will need to check the vaccine is safe and effective in humans, as well as how long the immunity might last. (1)If the tests in humans go smoothly, . A. a vaccine for use in the laboratory will be still be years away. B. pregnant women in Africa will be the first to benefit from the vaccine. C. a licensed vaccine will still not be accessible in a short term. D. The Zika virus will cause less serious birth defects during pregnancy in months. (2)Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. many countries are actively involved in the research of the Zika vaccine. B. US scientists have tested more than two types of Zika vaccine in mice. C. None of the mice given the vaccine caught Zika. D. It is still unknown whether the vaccine is safe and effective. (3)Which can be the best title for the passage? A. Zika vaccine 'works very well' in mice B. Zika vaccine still has a long way to go C. International researches into Zika have paid off D. More attention has been paid to Zika vaccine 【答案】(1)C (2)B

Most adults find it hard to recall events from their first few years of life and now scientists have found exactly when these childhood memories fade(消失). A new study has found that most three-year-olds can recall a lot of what happened to them over a year earlier, and these memories persist while they are five and six, but by the time they are over seven, these memories decline(衰退) rapidly. Most children by the age of eight or nine can only recall 35% of their experiences from under the age of three, according to the new findings. The scientists behind the research say this is because at around this age the way we form memories begins to change. They say that before the age of seven children do not have a sense of time and place in their memories. In older children, however, the early events they can recall tend to be more adult-like in the way they are formed. Children also have a far faster rate of forgetting than adults. The findings also help to explain why children can often have clear memories of events but then forget them just a couple of years later. The youngsters first visited the laboratory at the age of three and discussed six unique events from their past, such as family outings, trips to the zoo, and the first day of school. The children then returned for a second session between the ages of five and nine to discuss the same events. The researchers found that between the ages of five and seven, the amount of memories the children could recall remained between 63 -72 percent. However, the amount of information eight-to nine-year-old children could recall dropped to 35 and 36 percent. (1)What does the new study tell us? A.Childhood memories decline with years. B.Three-year-old kids are the cleverest. C.Childhood memories can fade easily. D.Some adults cannot recall past events. (2)What does the underlined word "persist" in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Change. B.Remain. C.Appear. D.Return. (3)What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A.Adults cannot have clear memories of past events. B.Children can think like adults when they get older. C.Children under 7 years old have different ways of forming memories. D.Children often forget things because they have no idea of time or place. (4)In the second session, nine-year-old children _________. A.refused to discuss the same events B.remembered all their family outings C.could recall 72 percent of their past events
