When you are learning a foreign language, one of the hardest things to grasp is how and when to use colloquial idioms(口语习语) and expressions. Often used in both spoken and written language, these idioms are very important. Using one of these phrases correctly when speaking or writing to an English speaker is very impressive. Here are some wonderful British idioms. Use them wisely.

1. It’s the bee’s knees.

This expression means that something is of excellence or of very high quality. For example, “Try this chocolate. It’s the bee’s knees.”

2. A penny for your thoughts?

This question is used in a situation where someone appears thoughtful or is very quiet seeming lost in thought. But remember that you don’t actually have to pay them a penny if they do tell you what is going on! For example, “You’ve been a bit quiet this evening, Pete. A penny for your thoughts?”

3. When pigs fly!

This expression is one of my favorites and I use it all the time. It is used primarily when speaking, meaning that something is extremely unlikely or impossible. For example, “I will forgive him when pigs fly!” “When do you think you will get a gym membership, Lucy?” “When pigs fly!”

4. To feel a bit under the weather.

I use this expression in many different situations but most use it to refer to feeling ill, or unwell. You would not use this phrase if you were feeling extremely unwell. It is only for those times when you are feeling a little ill or suffering from something slightly like a cold or a cough. However, this can also be used to refer to feeling emotionally low.

21. What would you say if you think something will never happen?

A. It’s the bee’s knees.

B. A penny for your thoughts?

C. When pigs fly!

D. To feel a bit under the weather.

22. What does “A penny for you thoughts?” mean?

A. Can I help you?

B. Do you need any money?

C. How are you feeling?

D. What are you thinking about?

23. What is the writer most likely to continue to write in the last paragraph

A. A study report

B. An example

C. Another idiom

D. The basis of the idiom.

24. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the text?

A. To introduce some useful idioms

B. To show how to remember idioms.

C. To tell people the importance of idioms.

D. To give advice on how to learn a foreign language.

That old saying “Never say never” came to mind when I read that Harper Lee, the author of the beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has a new book coming out in July, 2015—55 years after Mockingbird was published! The very private Ms. Lee had never followed up her highly praised first book, with a second novel. Instead, sh e’s following it up with a first novel. Confused? So was I! Allow me to explain.

Go Set a Watchman, was actually written before that classic volume. In the mid-1950s, Lee had completed Watchman, which features Scout Finch as a young woman from Alabama living in New York. The story follows Scout as she returns to visit her father, Atticus, the lawyer who fought racial injustice in Mockingbird.

But as Lee herself put it in a recent announcement through her publisher, “my editor, who was taken by the flashback(倒叙)to Scout’s childhood, persuaded me to write a novel from the point of view of the young Scout. I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told.” That book was, of course, To Kill a Mockingbird, and after it was released to great praise, Lee never returned to Go Set a Watchman. In fact, that earlier work was considered lost until Lee’s lawyer found a manuscript(手稿)of it.

“After much thought and hesitation I considered it worthy of publication.” said Lee. “I amamazed that this will now be published after all these years.” So the book that gave birth to To Kill a Mockingbird will now serve as its sequel(续集).

It’s safe to say that, decades after the publication of Mockingbird, millions of readers who were so touched by Ms. Lee’s second nove l will be counting the days until the release of her first one.25. When was Mockingbird published according to the text?

A. In 1950

B. In 1960

C. In 1970

D. In 198026. What can we know about the book of Watchman ?

A. Atticus found a manuscript of the writer.

B. Atticus was a lawyer fighting racial injustice.

C. Scout Finch got to Alabama to see Atticus.

D. Scout Finch lost one of Atticus’ manuscripts.

27. What does “the book” in the fourth paragraph refer to in the writer’s o pinion?

A. Mockingbird

B. To Kill a Mockingbird

C. Ms. Lee’s second novel

D. Go Set a Watchman

Shoyna, a small Russian village located on the edge of the arctic circle is often referred to as the world’s northernmost desert. The san d covers everything as far as the eye can see and the few people living here never dare shut their front doors at night, for fear of being buried alive. But itwasn’t always like this.

Historical records show that Shoyna was settled in the 1930s by fishermen drawn to the coast of the White Sea by the abundance of fish in the area. In just two decades, it had grown into a fishing port with a population of around 1,500 people and a fleet of roughly seventy fishing boats. However, it wasn’t long before the fishery collapsed. The dozens of vessels lining the shore stopped coming and many of the families slowly moved away. Today, the official number of inhabitants is 375, most of whom survive on the government’s unemployment benefits and pensions. Hunting is also a way to make ends meet, but it is the bulldozer(推土机) driver who earns the most in the village, as everyone needs their house dug up from the sand.

Sasha is the only bulldozer driver in the village and he helps people dig out their houses after a w indy night. However, he can’t help everyone. “It takes ten hours to uncover a house completely, and since one hour of work costs roughly $70, few people can afford my services,”he says. “ Plus, there aren’t enough hours in a day to help all those in need. I dig one house out, and the others are mad at me.”

Apart from having seen many of the houses sinking beneath the sand, locals have also developed physiological problems from constantly having to walk on uneven sand, according tothe local doctor

No one knows exactly what moved the sand upon this place, but experts believe it was caused by the local fishermen who cut down most of the trees. There are no roads or railroads connecting Shoyna to the rest of the world, so the only ways in and out of the village are by seaor air. Despite their struggles with the sand and isolation from the world, locals are reportedly very proud of their off-the-grid settlement and very hospitable, inviting visitors into their homes for traditional seafood feasts, despite the lack of fish in the sea.

28. What is the biggest trouble that faces the villagers in Shoyna?

A. ailing to find more trees. B.Being buried alive by sand.

C.Having no money to survive. D.Lacking food to feed themselves.

B. They make money by driving bulldozers.

C. They can support themselves by fishing.

30. Why are some people angry with Sasha?

D.Because he never offers free services to the villagers.

31. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “hospitable” in the last paragraph?

If you make one close friend in school, you will be the most fortunate. A true friend is someone who stays with you for life. Good friendship is just not easily formed.

It is possible that we simply do not stay in one place long enough for a true friendship to develop.

Mr. Darrell Sifford, a news reporter for the Washington Daily, has been studying about friendship for a number of years. He reports what one woman thought about the effects of movement on friendship:

“I was nine, and we’d just moved to New Jersey, and I didn’t know anybody. My mother has a way of getting to the root of things and she said to me,’ Amelia, I know you’re feeling bad because you don’t have any friends. But you can fix that. Just walk across the street---I know there’s a girl about your age over there--- and knock on the door

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

石家庄二中2020-2021学年第一学期高三英语学科周测试卷8、23

石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2. What might people benefit from the new technology mentioned above? A. Living a life free from stress. B. Improving the heart function gradually. C. Accessing health services for free. D. Knowing abnormal blood pressure earlier. 3. What can be done for a better Anura? A. Equipping phones with better cameras. B. Allowing phones to record longer videos. C. Collecting data from more diverse samples. D. Persuading participants not to take medicine. 4. Why does the author write this text? A. To predict future applications of TOI. B. To introduce TOI and an app related. C. To describe functions of cameras on phones. D. To evaluate the quality of an app called Anura. II 单项选择(必修五U1-U5;满分15分,每小题1分) 5. 高三英语考试题

高二英语 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分) A Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse. Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour. 1.Halley made his discovery________. B Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops. In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away. Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family. From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place. Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away. 5. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of . A. loud noises B. some crops C. video cameras D. angry bees 6. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy . A. works by herself in Africa B. needs to test more elephant groups C. has stopped elephants eating crops D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms 7. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive? A. To record the sound of bees. B. To make a video of elephants. C. To see if elephants would run away. D. To find out more about the behavior of bees. 8. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees. B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place. C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them. D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.
