Listening Comprehension

Section A

Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and a question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

1.M: What? Chicken salad, oyster soup and steak are all unavailable. What else on the menu can you serve?

W: Sorry sir. It’s winter now and many food items are in short supply on the market.

Q: Where does this conversation most probably take place?

2.W: It seems that you spend a lot on car gas every day. Why not take the subway?

M: Crowded in the small space like canned fish? I would rather give it a pass.

Q: What does the man mean?

3.W: Hey, Peter. You look tired. What’s up?

M: Well, Christmas is coming and calls about our package family tours have greatly increased. I am on the phone almost all the time.

Q: What probably is the man?

4.W: Honey, it’s so dirty here. I think we should get a maid for the cleanup of the house.

M: But what will you contribute to our home as a housewife if we have a maid in the house?

Q: What does the man mean?

5.M; Why didn’t you include James in the Math club? He is the smartest kid in the class?

W: Exploring the world of math requires not only intelligence but also huge interest, which obviously he lacks.

Q: What does the woman think of James?

6.W: Let’s play a basketball game.

M: Well, five players form a team. And we still need 3 people to total 10 people to make up two teams for a game.

Q: How many people are there right now?

7.W: I can’t find my ipad and I am afraid I left it in the library on Wednesday.

M: Three days ago in a public place? You might as well buy a new one.

Q: What does the man mean?

8.M: Hey, a new science fiction film is released. Do you care to see it with me tomorrow afternoon?

W; You know I am a huge science fiction fan. If it weren’t for the dentist appointment for my toothache, I would be more than glad to go to see it with you.

Q: What does the woman mean?

9.M: A new research finds out that more than half of the teenagers choose reading as their most-liked leisure time

activity.

W: But what I see most teenagers around me holding in their hands are mobile phones instead of books.

Q:What does the woman mean?

10.M: I would like to have that oven which is on sale now.

W:It’s a “First come, first serve” sale item and now it’s out of stock.

Q: What does the woman mean?

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two passages and one longer conversation. After each passage or

conversation, you will be asked several questions. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Recently, the giant cola company Coca-Cola showed off its new bottle at the Expo Milano food technology conference. The bottle is plastic but instead of using petroleum, the bottle's plastic is coming from sugar cane.

Coca-Cola said the sugar cane used in the PlantBottles comes from Brazil and the company is also working on transferring fruit stems, peels and bark into plastic.

The soda company didn't say when it would start shipping Coke in the new bottles, but Coca-Cola noted that it is studying in producing a 100% plant-based plastic bottle.

For the past few years, Coca-Cola has already distributed more than 35 billion plant bottle packages in more than 40 countries. As a result, the company estimates that it has already eliminated huge carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which is the company’s final goal

The company is also working with Heinz, P & G and SeaWorld to help those companies use more plant materials in their plastics as well. Through these partnerships, the company is determined to lead the consumer packaged goods industry away from its dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels and towards using renewable plant-based alternatives. Heinz ketchup bottles and cups at SeaWorld have already been made of Plant plastics.

Questions

11. Why did Coca-Cola try to adopt plant bottles?

12. Why does Coca-Cola work with other companies?

13. What is the passage mainly about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

Listeners, Japanese toilets have long and famously dominated the world of bathroom with their various functions, from shower jets to perfume bursts and noise-masking audio effects.

The latest "intelligent" model, manufactured by market leader Toto, goes a step further. It offers its users an instant health check-up every time they answer the call of nature.

Toto's engineers developed a device inside the basin to collect the substances for sugar content and temperature checks. The result is displayed on a computer screen on the wall.

With the current model, the user’s data are sent automatically to his personal computer while in the next generation model to be released next year, the data can be sent automatically to the user’s family members or doctors via the Internet. If anything goes wrong with the user, his doctor is able to obtain first-hand alarm in the matter of seconds.

This Intelligence Toilet retails for about 500,000 Japanese yen, which is not affordable to most youngsters. Therefore for now the customers are mostly middle-aged and senior people. However, it is hoped that the young generation will sooner or later become more health-conscious and receive the product as well.

Now listen again please.

Questions

14. What is the new function of Toto’s intelligence toilet?

15. How will the next generation model develop next year?

16. Why aren’t the intelligence toilets popular with young people now?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

W: How can we help you?

M: Hi. I am thinking of renting a car so…

W: Super Car Rental is a professional car-renting service provider with 20 years of experience.

M: Good. I have my own private car. But this August our family is planning a trip to France. Do you have a branch near CDG airport?

W: Sure sir. Our Paris office is only one mile from the airport.

M: Great. Other companies offer big discounts but their Paris base is too faraway. That’s why I come to you. W: What kind of car do you need?

M: We prefer a spacious car.

W: Sure sir. How about an electric vehicle, one powered by electricity?

M: But I wonder whether the battery is powerful enough for long distances and the possible electronic radiation is a big concern.

W: It’s old news sir. These problems have already been solved. However, in your case, the charging point is a big issue. As you will go to many places, I am afraid you can’t find one when your car needs recharging. M: Maybe not electric then.

W: In that case, a 7-seat Japanese car is suitable for you.

M: How about the fee.

W: We charge 40 euros a day and you can get 30 euros off the total fee for any lease over 10 days.

M: Excellent. Our two week tour fits the type,

W: And you have to pay for your own gas. Plus, if you receive a traffic ticket and a fine is required…

M;I will manage that myself of course.

W: And normally customers should cover insurance too while our company is on an annual promotion campaign and we will deal with that for all the customers.

M: Thanks a lot and…

Now listen again please.

Questions

17. Why does the man choose Super Car Rental?

18. Why won’t the man pick up an electric car?

19. How much rent will the man pay for the whole tour?

20. What will be paid by Super Car Rental?

That’s the end of listening comprehension.
