Lumberjack Art

When people think of an artist, they probably do not imagine a lumberjack(伐木工人) cutting down trees with a chainsaw. Yet many lumberjacks consider themselves to be artists. Instead of patiently working

on a large block of hard rock, however, lumberjack artists use chainsaws to carve their masterpieces from wood.

Wooden sculptures(雕塑) created with chainsaws are perfect examples of folk art. Everyday tools are used to create art that focuses on subjects found in nature, such as bears or other forest animals. Not all lumberjacks are artists, but some chainsaw artists have been lumberjacks.

A lumberjack who is also an artist might cut down a tree during a workday. If the stump, the bottom of the tree, is a good size, the artist might be motivated to sculpt the stump into the shape of a forest animal. The chainsaw artist might also carve other large blocks of wood. Sometimes a homeowner might cut down a tree in the yard and then hire a chainsaw artist to create an outdoor sculpture from the stump. So, this art owes its origins to everyday tasks and nature.

The origins of chainsaw art may be humble(不起眼的), but the practice has expanded well beyond turning a stump into a sculpture. In some ways chainsaw artists are like traditional woodcarvers. One artist said that using chainsaws was simply more practical. This person began his work as a traditional woodcarver—that is, he used hand tools to carve the wood into the shapes he wanted. To save time, he began using a chainsaw to remove some parts of the wooden block. This artist realized that the chainsaw not only cut down large pieces of wood quickly, but it also produced a distinctive and beautiful pattern on the wood. These patterns would not be seen in other pieces of art. Eventually, the artist began using the chainsaw for nearly all of his carvings.

However unusual it may seem, chainsaw art is here to stay. The final test of success for any type of art is the enthusiasm and acceptance of the public. The conclusion is: people love watching chainsaw artists work, and people love the sculptures they create.

21. What do we know about chainsaw artists?

A. They are originally traditional lumberjacks.

B. They create masterpieces in woods and forests.

C. They introduce a new concept of artists to people.

D. They produce their sculptures while cutting down trees.

22. Chainsaw art _____.

A. is a kind of folk art

B. is hard to be spread

C. focuses on modern themes

D. needs time to be mastered

23. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 4?

A. The origins of the lumberjack art.

B. The experiences of a chainsaw artist.

C. The procedure for creating a chainsaw sculpture.

D. The application of chainsaw in the lumberjack art.

You know what it’s like. You’ve just arrived in Toronto after a long flight, and all you really want to do is to lie down and relax in your hotel room. But first you have to make a few quick notes for tomorrow’s meeting, then check your e-mails, and perhaps print out a few things. And you need to make a few local telephone calls, and one call home to your family.

And what do you usually get? Your desk is just about big enough for a cup of coffee; there’s no desk lamp; the stationery(办公用品) is a couple of sheets of headed notepaper; and a pen doesn’t work. Well, Harmony is different. Just tell us in advance what you’re going to need, and we’ll see that it’s waiting for you when you arrive. There will be a printer in your room if you want one, and a cellphone that really works. All you have to pay for is the calls you make.

We can also arrange a room for business meetings, and, using the very best employment agency, even supply a secretary to take minutes. All we ask is a few days’ notice.

All our rooms are of the same high standard, and we guarantee not to increase prices in the next twelve months. But book now, because we’re already filling up fast, and we’d hate to disappoint you.

Robots are being used for the first time in hospitals. “Robot-nurses” perform a variety of tasks such as delivering medicine, food and labor atory samples to sickrooms and taking away waste. Patients aren’t treated by robots, as this is still done by medical staff. The idea is to employ robots to transport supplies between departments.

“Nurses often have to break off from what they are doing to gather supplies,” says Peter Seiff, who makes the robots called TUGs. Research shows any interruption in medical work can lead to errors --- a nurse may forget whether she has given medicine and may give a patient double the dose (剂量) or none at all.

The robots vary in size according to what job they perform, but normally take the shape of a metal box on wheels, with a box on the side containing their software.

After being programmed, the robots are able to find their way around a hospital unassisted. They also contain scanning technology to create electronic pictures or a “memory” of routes on their hard drives to help them go through passages, doors and other obstacles. Each robot is also monitored at the producer’s headquarters (总部) in case it runs into any difficulties.

Trials show TUGs reduce the time it takes for a patient to receive medicine, and stop drugs from going missing. A study at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in the U.S. found that when three TUGs were used over the course of a year, the average length of time from the drugstore receiving a prescription to the patient receiving it dropped from 74 minutes to 30 minutes and saved nurses 6,123 hours finding medicines. It also cut the number of medicines that went missing to zero.

“The biggest complaints we receive from patients is that the nurses don’t spend enough time with them.

Anything that frees nurses is a boon,” says Katherine Mulligan, director of nursing at the hospital, “The TUGs allow nurses to spend more time focusing on pat ient care. Nurse satisfaction has improved.”

28. Which of the following activities are robot-nurses NOT programmed to deal with?

A. Transporting supplies.

31. What is the attitude of the author towards robot-nurses?

Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖)seem to age faster than other rats-and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday.

Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurt. But while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles, the researchers said.Dr.Moshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory rats.Writing in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen(胶原蛋白)of their skin and bones.Collagen basically holds the body together. The loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people,

The process affected, Werman's team said, is known as cross-linking(交叉相连).Too much cross-linking makes the skin stiff, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin," Werman said in a statement. He said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shown."Americans are eating more and more processed foods such as baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose," Werman said.Other studies have shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes(糖尿病).

The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experiments. The rats were fed 12.5 grams of fructose per kg of weight every day for a year.

32. In the experiments, if a rat was 0.25 kg, it may have been fed about grams of fructose every day for

a year.

A. 3

B. 4

C. 5

D. 6

33. Why do older people have deep wrinkles according to the passage?

A. They don't drink enough water every day.

B. They don't take enough exercise every day.

C. Collagen in their body is lost.

D. Their daily foods do not contain enough fructose.

34. What can we learn from the passage?

A.The fructose-fed rats only showed changes in the collagen of their skin.

B.Too much cross-linking makes the skin soft.

C.The amount of sugar the rats ate was larger than an ordinary adult might eat in a day.

D.It hasn't been shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes.

35.The best title for the passage should be “” .

A.Sugar------it could reduce collagen B.Collagen------it could age you

C.Collagen------it could cause wrinkles D.Sugar------it could age you

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.

A Famous centenarians (百岁老人) still active in arts, science are in no mood to retire. "Those who stand still, die," is one of Oliveira's favorite phrases. He knows from experience what it means, as the Portuguese film director has reached the age of 102 and is still active in his profession. Every year, Oliveira shoots a film and is currently working on his next project. "You have to work, work, work in order to forget that death is not far away," he said. When asked about his age, Oliveira said with some humility: "It's down to mother nature. It gave to me what it took from others." Being both mentally and physically fit in old age is partly a matter of luck, but it also has something to do with character. Not every white-haired person is wise and social skills, openness and the ability to train the brain are essential for senior citizens. Along with the architect Oscar Niemeyer (103), Nobel laureate Montalcini (101) and director Kurt Maetzig (100), Oliveira is one of those people of whom it would be very wrong to think as members of a listless elderly generation. Another master in his profession is the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The 103-year-old Brazilian is best known for his futuristic-looking(未来派的)buildings in Brasilia, but he also speaks out on behalf of the poor. "The role of the architect is to struggle for a better world where we can develop a form of architecture that serves everyone and not just a privileged few," said Niemeyer recently. He spends almost every day working in his office in Copacabana, and even when he falls ill he keeps working on ideas: After a gallbladder (胆囊) operation he composed a samba tune (桑巴舞曲) in the clinic. Another man who could sing a song about age is 107-year-old Heesters. The Dutch-born opera singer spent most of his life performing in Germany, where he still works. Recently Heesters said: "I want to be at least 108-years-old." He also plans to keep performing. "Should I just sit at home and wait until they come and pick me up?" Heesters has not given up trying to add to his tally of awards and is looking for a "good stage role". Italian scientist Rita Levi-Montalcini, who is 101-year-old and is still active in medical science, has described the force that keeps driving her on: "Progress is created through imperfection." In 1986 she and her lab colleague were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work on nerve growth factor. She's convinced that humans grow on challenges.
