Questions 20 to 23 are based on the following passage.

White rice is the world’s most popular form of rice. But it goes through a milling process that removes many nutrients(营养成分). As a result, people who eat a poor diet based on white rice may not get enough vitamin A.

Each year about 250,000 to 500,000 children go blind from vitamin A deficiency. The World Health Organization(WHO)says half of them die within a year of losing their sight. Vitamin A deficiency is a problem especially in Africa and Southeast Asia.

So scientists thought of an answer. They combined white rice with plant compounds that the body can change into vitamin A. These plant colorings give the rice a golden color.

The scientists also thought of a plan to give away this Golden Rice for free to poor farmers. But the rice cannot be made using traditional methods. The scientists worked for ten years, until 1990, to develop the technology to add genes to rice. Then it took nine more years to get the genes they wanted into the seed.

Professor Ingo Potrykus says rice with two added genes will be available in 2013. One gene comes from maize, or corn, and the other from a soil bacterium(细菌).Opponents say such crops may cause environmental damage by breeding with other plants. Opponents also question the safety of Golden Rice. However, Mr. Potrykus says Golden Rice has never been shown to be unsafe for the environment or people. Many agricultural organizations support the project.

20. What is the probable reason why some people do not get enough Vitamin A?

A. Because they are short of food

B. Because they feed on white rice

D. Because white rice has no nutrients

21. The underlined word “deficiency” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .

B. In 1990

C. In 2000

D. In 2004

23. What is professor Potrykus’s attitude towards the breeding of Golden Rice?

A. Doubtful

B. Negative

C. Neutral

D. Positive

Question 24 to 27 are based on the following passage.

Scientists can learn about man by studying animals, such as mice, rats and monkeys. The scientists in a laboratory are experimenting on mice and they are studying the relationship between diet and health.

In this experiment, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice can eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All these groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second two cups, and the third three cups.

After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day. The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice but they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer. Mice usually live for two years, while most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.

The second group of mice is of normal weight. They are healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. But they are only living about two years.

The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought—about a year and a half, but they are not healthy. The are sick more often than the other two groups.

24. The first group is the thinnest mainly because .

Questions 28 to 31 are based on the following passage.

The number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States has increased continually for fifth year.

The Institute of International Education in New York released its annual”Open Doors” report this week. It says a record of more than 720,000 students from other countries were studying in America during the last school year. The number was 5% higher than the year before and almost one-third higher than ten years ago.

There were big increases from China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Iran and Venezuela. Almost 22% of international students were Chinese, with increases especially at the undergraduate level. Together, almost half of all international students came from China, India and South Korea.

Peggy Blumenthal at the institute says that Chinese students are now studying throughout the United States. Twenty years ago, students from China only knew of a handful of the US institutions, but now they are admitted into the US community colleges, small liberal arts institutions, and research universities—really spread across the US. Ms. Blumenthal suggests that one reason for the increase is a lack of space in Chinese colleges for everyone who wants an education. She says students and their parents are also looking for a different educational experience.

More international students study in California than in any other states. For ten years in a row, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles led the country, with more than 8,600 foreign students.

The most popular area of study for international students is business and management, followed by engineering.

C.about 158,000

D.about 8,600

D.In engineering institutions

31.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Home Countries of International Students in the US

C.New Trends of International Students in the US

D.Backgrounds of International Students in the US

Question 32 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Step 1: Use open-ended questions

For a conversation to flow well, it’s important to ask open questions, these often start with “how”,”when”,”why”, etc. Try to avoid asking closed questions that can be answered with yes or no answer, because closed question tend to kill the conversation.

Step 2: Listen actively

People speak at 100 to 175 words per minute, but they can listen intelligently at up to 300 words per minute. Since only a part of our mind is paying attention. It is easy to go into mind drift —thinking about other things while listening to someone. The cure for this is active listening, which involves listening with a purpose.

Step 3: Create a “cocoon”

If you’re finding it particularly difficult to concentrate on what someone is saying, try to imagine a “cocoon”around you and the person you’re listening to. Imagine that the cocoon is blocking out all outside distractions(干扰), so you can really focus on what they are saying.

Step 4: Engage with the other person

When someone is trying to get your attention, or engage you in a conversation, don’t turn your back on them, or answer over your shoulder. Instead, turn and face them, engage with them. Good communication is when you really engage. When you are talking to people, observe your body language and your tone of voice. Remember to use gestures, look people in the eye and smile when you talk unless you are complaining about something.

32.Which of the following questions tends to kill a conversation according to the passage?

A.Why do you like reading novels?

B.What do you usually read?

C.How do you improve your reading skills?

C.Do you like reading science fiction?

A.thinking about something else

B.listening with a purpose

C.feeling comfortable

D.speaking slowly

34.What is your purpose to engage with the speaker in a conversation?

A. for the tone of your voice

B.for the use of body language

C.for blocking distractions

D. for good communication

35.What is the passage mainly about?

A.improvement in communication skills.

B.open-ended questions vs. closed questions

C.distractions and concentration

D.mind drift and engaging in conversations

江苏专转本英语真题及答案

江苏省2012 年普通高校专转本统一英 语考试 第一卷(共100 分) Part I Reading Comprehension(共20 题,每题 2 分,共40 分) Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS. The technique stops the AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood, it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes (淋巴细胞). The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes, then forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic (基因的)material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from spreading by preventing virus from connecting to T4 cells. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell, it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to the cloned protein instead of the real ones. Scientists use the genetic engineering methods to make the clones. Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times. The AIDS virus must go to it.In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell. It floats freely, so many more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 proteins on T4 cells. One report says the AIDS virus connects to the cloned proteins j ust as effectively as to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning t o be tested in animals. If successful, it may be tested in humans within a year. 1. The new technique can ________. A. cure AIDS B. kill the AIDS virus C. prevent the AIDS virus from spreading D. produce new medicines for AIDS 2. When the AIDS virus enters the blood, it is reproduced by ________. A. the inside of the virus itself B. any blood cells in the body C. the CD4 protein D. the genetic material of T4 cells 3 The AIDS virus connects to cloned proteins instead of to the real ones because ________. A. the cloned proteins stay on the T4 cells B. the cloned proteins can float freely in the blood C. it connects to cloned proteins more effectively than to the real ones D. the cloned proteins are made by genetic engineering methods 4. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The new technique has been tested in labs. B. The new technique is being tested in animals. C. The new technique may be tested in humans. D. The new technique is now under clinical test. 5 Which of the following could be the best title of this passage? A. AIDS---a Fatal Disease. B. A New Technique in fighting AIDS. C. A Report on the Spread of AIDS Virus. D. The Technique of Cloned CD4 Protein. Passage TWO Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. 2012年英语专四真题及答案完整版

2012专四听写参考答案 Nowadays, many of us try to live in a way that will damage the environment as little as possible. We recycle our newspapers and bottles, we take public transport to get to work, we try to buy locally produced fruit and vegetables, and we want to take these attitudes on holiday with us. This is why alternative forms of tourism are becoming popular in the world. There are a lot of names for these new forms of tourism: responsible tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, educational tourism and more. Although everyone may have a different definition, most people agree that these new forms of tourism should do the following: first, they should conserve the wildlife and culture of the area; second, they should benefit the local people; third, they should make a profit without destroying natural resources; and finally they should provide an experience that tourists want to pay for. 2012专四听力参考答案

Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage One Questions 1~5 are besed on the following passage. Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucius Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统)and keeping the blooding pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man in the country who has not gone through this process --- sometimes six or seven times. 1. The word “matchmaking” in the passage means ____. A. a very formal ritual(仪式)attended by boys and girls B. introducing boys and girls to know each other for the purpose of marriage C. producing matches to make a fire or light a cigarette D. arranging games between men and women 2. The fact that the first meeting is repeated again and again in coffee shops in the main hotels suggests that ____. A. Koreans like drinking coffee in coffee shops very much B. men and women want to meet as many times as possible C. they are busy with communicating with different people D. marriage is seen as a business contract instead of something sacred
