出题特点:

Why does the author mention/list....?

首段开头例子的作用---引出话题(introduce the topic; lead in the topic)

2021浙江B

At the start of the 20th century, an American engineer named John Elfreth Watkins made predictions about life today. His predictions about slowing population growth, mobile phones and increasing height were close to the mark. But he was wrong in one prediction: that everybody would walk 10 miles a day.

Today, in Australia, most children on average fall 2,000 steps short of the physical activity they need to avoid being overweight. In the early 1970s, 40 per cent of children walked to school, while in 2010, it was as low as 15 per cent.

The decline is not because we have all become lazy. Families are pressed for time, many with both parents working to pay for their house, often working hours not of their choosing, living in car-dependent neighborhoods with limited public transport.

The other side of the coin is equally a deprivation: for health and well-being, as well as lost opportunities(机会) for children to get to know their local surroundings. And for parents there are lost opportunities to walk and talk with their young scholar about their day.

Most parents will have eagerly asked their child about their day, only to meet with a “good”, quickly followed by “I’m hungry”. This is also my experience as a mother. But somewhere over the daily walk more about my son’s day comes out. I hear him making sense of friendship and its limits. This is the unexpected and rare parental opportunity to hear more.

Many primary schools support walking school-bus routes(路线), with days of regular, parent-accompanied walks. Doing just one of these a few times a week is better than nothing. It can be tough to begin and takes a little planning—running shoes by the front door, lunches made the night before, umbrellas on rainy days and hats on hot ones—but it’s certainly worth trying.

24. Why does the author mention Watkins’ pre dictions in the first paragraph?

A. To make comparisons.

B. To introduce the topic.

C. To support her argument.

D. To provide examples.

Rising sea levels and the potential impacts to huge coastal populations worldwide rank near the top of concerns whenl it comes to consequences of a worsening climate emergeney. But a lesser-known danger poses an equal or arguably more urgent threat to millions around the world living at much higher altitudes: flooding from glacial lakes.

With average temperatures rising around the world in recent decades, a number of these lakes high above population centers in South America and Asia have become swollen and unstable as the reserves of snow and ice that feed them melt ever quicker.

For the first time, an international team of researchers has quantified(量化)this threat. It reports that 15 million people are in the path of potential floods from these swollen bodies of water. "Understanding which areas face the greatest dangerl from glacial flooding will allow for more targeted and effective risk management actions, which in turn will help minimize loss of life and damage to infrastructure(基础设施)downstream," said co-author Rachel Carr, head of physical geography at Newcastle University.

In 1941.a glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, from Lake Palcacocha killed thousands in the town of Huaraz below and largely inspired the beginning of research into the phenomenon. Dams and other infrastructure were put in place tol relieve the threat from the lake in the 1970s,b ut its volume is now over 30 times greater, requiring new improvements to safely drain and release water pressure.

Lead researcher Caroline Taylor says the researchers also found that understanding the danger requires more than just counting lakes and measuring their volume. "Instead, it is the number of people, their

distance to a glacial lake andl importantly, their ability to cope with a flood that determines the potential danger from a GLoF event."

In recent years, a warning system was set up at Lake Palcacocha that could give residents of Huaraz enough time to get out of the way of an incoming flood. Meanwhile, other threatened villages with no such alert system continue to rely on hope and luck.

32. Why does the author mention rising sea levels in the first paragraph?

A. To make a comparison.

B. To introduce the topic.

C. To provide an example.

D. To support his argument.

Why do we choose to help one another? There are many reasons. You may be a selfless person or lending a hand may be a cultural expectation.

Now, researchers are raising the possibility that good sleep may be a wonderful ingredient that promotes the alacrity to offer help between human beings. Indeed the better sleep you have, the more willing you will be to lend a hand. And a surprising new set of research studies have found that sleep loss may affect our generosity at different levels.

Researchers at University of California, Berkley, led three small studies to explore generosity. In one study, they exposed a group of healthy adults to a night of 8 hours of sleep and a night with no sleep. Researchers scanned the participants' brains after each night. After a sleepless night, areas of the brain involved in empathy and helping behavior were less active. In fact, when the study participants were sleepless at night, 78% of them demonstrated a reduction in the desire to help others.

In the next study, researchers tracked 136 people through online questionnaires and sleep diaries for a few days. They wanted to see if nightly variations in sleep affected their desire to help others. They found that, when sleep quality worsened from one night to the next, there was a major decrease in "helping choices" and vice versa.

The third study looked at how sleep loss affected generosity on a larger scale. The researchers analyzed data from over 3 million charitable donations made in the U.S.. They focused on donations during the transition to Daylight Saving Time(DST)in spring each year. During the spring time change, we lose an hour of sleep.

Interestingly, researchers found a 10% drop in donations in regions that change their clocks. This drop wasn't seen in regions that didn't observe the time change. It showed that insufficient sleep triggered by the time change impacted donation behavior.

All these results suggest that insufficient sleep makes us less compassionate and helpful. Throughout the world, more than half of adults don't get enough sleep during the workweek, but we should all start valuing adequate sleep rather than treating it like something optional or unproductive. If so, it will enable us to be more helpful and to be the best versions of ourselves.

28. What's the writing purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To start a heated discussion.

B. To introduce the topic of the text.

C. To present a social phenomenon.

D. To show the author's conclusion.

2023华中师大一附中四月押题

This month, the Internet was flooded with wonderful digital art portraits, thanks to the work of the latest artificial intelligence-assisted application to go viral: Lensa. Users uploaded their photographs to the App and then-for a small fee-it used Al to transform their profile pictures into, say, a magical warrior princess version of themselves, in no time at all.

This year has seen a breakthrough for Al-driven image generators, which are now better than ever in quality, speed and affordability. If that sounds great to you, you might not be one of the millions of humans whose livelihoods depend on being able to exchange those skills for money.

Some artists predicted that a computer would recreate the aura of a masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci in the near future. As long as there are enough data for the Al to train itself, it can copy numerous

masterpieces just in several minutes. It seems unavoidable that a large number of artists would lose their jobs.

“I see it less as a threat and more of an opportunity," the UK-based illustrator Michelle Thompson said, adding," Like everything else, there will always be artists who can use the tools better.”

These tools are only as good as the data sets they are trained on. Human imagination, on the other hand, has no limit. For Dryhurst, an artist from Germany, Al models “could attempt to make a pale version of something we did years ago”, but that “doesn't account for what we might do next”.

The kind of artificial intelligence we might imagine replacing artists--an entirely autonomous creative robot--does not yet exist, but it is coming. And as Al becomes more universal, artists, illustrators and designers will ultimately be set apart not by if, but by how, they use the technology.

24.Why does the author mention Lensa in Paragraph 1?

A. To recommend the new App.

B.To inform latest news.

C.To lead in the AI topic.

D.To introduce its new function.

Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.

We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.

Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.

Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.

题目:W hy does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?

C.To present a fact

D.To make a prediction

You’ve heard that plastic is polluting the oceans—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.

At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called“Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源)of plastic polluti on, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that' s part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.

In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: every 60 seconds, a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic, "Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒)from a truck all at once.

Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.

29. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?

A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.

B. To explain why they are useful.

C. To voice his views on modern art.

D. To find a substitute for them.

My First Marathon(马拉松)

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was“ not athletic”.

The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I wok e up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile3, I passed a sign:“ GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself,, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a "marathon winner”.

37. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year?

A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher.

B. To amuse the readers with a funny story.

C. To show he was not talented in sports.

D. To share a precious memory.

As cultural symbols go, the American car is quite young. The Model T Ford was built at the Piquette Plant in Michigan a century ago, with the first rolling off the assembly line(装配线)on September 27,1908. Only eleven cars were produced the next month. But eventually Henry Fordwould build fifteen million of them.

ModernAmericawas born on the road, behind a wheel. The car shaped some of the most lasting aspects of Americanculture: the roadside diner, the billboard, the motel, even the hamburger. Formost of the last century, the car represented what it meant to be American—going forward at high speed to find new worlds. The roadnovel, the road movie, these are the most typical American ideas, born ofabundant petrol, cheap cars and a never-ending interstate highway system, thelargest public works project in history.

In 1928 Herbert Hoover imagined anAmericawith “achicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” Since then, this society hasmoved onward, never looking back, as the car transformedAmericafrom afarm-based society into an industrial power.

The cars that drove the American Dream havehelped to create a global ecological disaster. InAmericathe demand for oil hasgrown by 22 percent since 1990.

The problems of excessive(过度的)energy consumption, climate change and population growthhave been described in a book by the American writer Thomas L. Friedman. Hefears the worst, but hopes for the best.

Friedman points out that the green economy(经济)is a chance to keep American strength. “The ability todesign, build and export green technologies for producing clean water, cleanair and healthy and abundant food is going to be the currency of power in thenew century.”

28. Why is hamburger mentioned in paragraph 2?

A. To explain Americans’ love for travelling by car.

B. To show the influence of cars on American culture.

C. To stress the popularity of fast food with Americans.

D. To praise the effectiveness of America’s road system.

Britons used to see the National Health Service (NHS)as a source of pride. It is now a source of danger. Leaked data suggest that, in one week in December, over 50,000 sick people in England waited more than 12 hours to be admitted tol hospital from accident-and-emergency (A&E) departments. The Economist's mortality(死亡率)model echoes the warnings from emergeney doctors: around one in four excess deaths in recent months is due to delays in emergeney care.

The scenes in A&E are just the most alarming symptoms of a health-care system that is failing due to a shortage of staff, which bedevils general practices the network of family doctors where many of the pressures on the NHS first build. General practitioners (GPs)are conventionally a patient's first and most frequent point of contact with Britain's health-care professionals. But the system is under pressure. Demand is rising-owing partly to the pandemic and partly to an inerease in patients with complex, chronic(慢性的)diseases. And the number of doctors is decreasing, as GPs retire early, emigrate or reduce their hours. There are 15%more junior doctors in hospitals than there were in 2019,but 2%fewer full-time familyl doctors. As a result, millions are not getting the care they need. Many turn directly to the hospitals. Statisties shows that one in five people who cannot see their family doctor goes to A&E instead. Many simply get sicker.

To address the problem, the NHS should abolish the Quality and Outcomes Framework, a pointless plan which means that GPs spend hours filling out forms instead of seeing patients. Drugstores and other parts of the primary-care systeml should be encouraged to do more. Practices specialising in chronic illnesses should receive higher fixed fees per patient,l enabling continuity of care for those who most need it. Reweighting funding to benefit clinies in the poorest areas wouldl reduce health differences: they care for 10%more patients than practices in the richest areas, but receive 7%less cash.

The NHS's most urgent problem lies in its hospitals. But the health service will not be fixed unless general practice is, too.

28. What is the purpose of referring to The Economist's mortality model?

A. To appeal to the public emotions.

B. To introduce the claims of emergency doctors.

C. To emphasize the influence of the world-famous magazine.

D. To clarify the link between deaths and delays in emergency care.

Experts used to believe that people assess risk like actuaries (精算师), figuring out cost-benefit analyses every time a car came too close or local crime rates rose. But a wave of psychological experiments in the1980s denied this thinking.

Researchers found that people use a set of mental shortcuts for measuring danger. And they tend to do it unconsciously, meaning that instinct (直觉) can play a much larger role than they realize. Ideally, these shortcuts help people figure out which ones to worry about and which to disregard. But they can be imperfect.

When you encounter a potential risk, your brain does a quick search for past experiences with it. If it can easily pull up multiple alarming memories, then your brain concludes the danger is high. But it often fails to assess whether those memories are truly representative.

A classic example is airplane crashes. If two happen continuously, flying suddenly feels scarier—even if your conscious mind knows that those crashes are a statistical aberration (统计异常)with little influence on the safety of your next flight. But if you then take a few flights and nothing goes wrong, your brain will most likely start telling you again that flying is safe.

That tendency can cut in both directions, leading to either alarm or complacency (自大).Though flu kills tens of thousands of Americans every year, most peoples’ experiences with it are relatively ordinary. “We’re conditioned by our experiences,” said Paul Slovic, a University of Oregon psychologist. “But experience can mislead us to be too comfortable with things. We are also conditioned to focus heavily on new threats, looking for any cause for alarm.”

Maybe the most powerful shortcut of all is emotion. Our brains translate emotional reactions into what we believe are reasoned conclusions, even if hard data tells us otherwise. The world in our heads is no t a precise copy of reality. Our expectations about frequency of events are misinterpreted by the popularity and emotional intensity of the messages to which we are exposed.

33. Why does the author give an example of airplane crashes?

A. To demonstrate how to take a shortcut.

B. To emphasize the importance of experience.

C. To prove people are good at measuring risks.

D. To explain memories can be misleading.

Given how valuable intelligence and automation are, we will continue to improve our te chnology if we are at all able to. At a certain point, we will build machines that are smarter than we are. Once we have machines that are smarter than we are, they will begin to improve themselves. The concern is really that we will build machines that are much more competent than we are. And the slightest divergence (分歧) between their goals and our own could destroy us.

Just think about how we relate to ants. We don't hate them. We don't go out of our way to harm them. In fact, sometimes we take pains not to harm them. We step over them on the sidewalk. But whenever their presence seriously conflicts with one of our goals, we will kill them without hesitation. The concern is that we will one day build machines that, whether they're conscious or not, could treat us with similar disregard.

The bare fact is that we will continue to improve our intelligent machines. We have problems that we desperately need to solve. So we will do this, if we can. The train is already out of the station, and there's no brake to pull. If we build machines that are more intelligent than we are, they will very likely develop in ways that we can't imagine, and transcend us in ways that we can't imagine.

So imagine we hit upon a design of super intelligent AI that has no safety conce rns. This machine would be the perfect labor-saving device. It can design the machine that can build the machine which can do any physical work, powered by sunlight, more or less for the cost of raw materials. So we're talking bout the end of human labour. We're also talking about the end of most intellectual work. So what would apes like ourselves do in these circumstances?

But the moment we admit that information processing is the source of intelligence, we have to admit that we are in the process of building some sort of god. Now would be a good time to make sure it's a god we can live with.

32. Why does the author mention ants in Paragraph 2?

A. To compare intelligent machines to ants.

B. To show improved machines will get away from us.

C. To stress the presence of machines does conflict with our goals.

D. To explain future intelligent machines could treat us without mercy

My friend never did well in school but always had a sharp eye for beauty. One day I was busy arranging some flowers in a vase but just couldn’t get them to look right. She came along, and with a few skillful waves of her hand, transformed them into a stunning bouquet. When praised for having this amazing ability, she shrugged off the compliment. She simply didn’t view her c reativity as anything special.

Too often we underestimate our own talents in this way. Maybe it’s because we’ve become used to believing that only abilities like a high I.Q., a gift for mathematics or a large vocabulary have cognitive (认知的) value. I was fortunate to learn otherwise at a young age.

When I entered high school, a guidance counselor told my mother I wasn’t college material because I had performed miserably on the spelling section of a standardized test. Thankfully my mother recognized my other intellectual (智力的) gifts and stood up for me, insisting I be put into the college-track curriculum. This experience literally defined the course of my life. It showed me how important it is not to accept a label someone else put on me and it allowed me to realize my full potential.

In the early 1980’s,Howard Gardner, a prominent Harvard researcher, pioneered a concept of “multiple intelligences”.In his book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, he suggested that intelligence is not limited to a traditional interpretation but instead includes a wide range of cognitive abilities.

What I love about the multiple intelligences theory is that it allows you to reframe your own abilities and talents, especially those that don’t necessarily fit into neat academic boxes. While it’s true one must meet a basic level of intelligence for achievement, the analytical skills measured by I.Q. do not tell the whole story. This is why we should celebrate all of our talents and abilities. They’re part o f what makes your individual brain so wonderful and unique.

10. Why did the author mention Howard Gardner’s book?

A. To introduce a new topic.

B. To clarify a concept.

C. To recommend the book.

D. To support his opinion.

Every 40 days a language dies. This "catastrophic" loss is being intensified by the climate crisis;according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.

Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) ,with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the "final nail in the coffin" for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.

"Languages are already endangered, "says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. "It seems particularly cruel," she says, "that most of the world's languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasa nt to people. " Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. "Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise." Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.

In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is "not only important for them, but for all humanity", said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.

29. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?

A. To explain the main reason for language density.

B. To show the common features of endangered languages.

C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.

D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.

In 1986, I watched my first soccer match on my parents' big box television. I was six, and ever since then, I have dreamed of attending the World Cup.

This year, I traveled to Brazil to make my dream a reality. The first match I attended was between Australia and Spain. Within minutes of walking into the stadium, I found myself surrounded by the excited fans, talking and cheering together. Unlike what one normally sees on the news, this ma tch was mainly peaceful except for one fight. When the fight started, the whole section began chanting (呼喊) with one voice, asking those fighting to stop. When they didn't, the rabble-rousers were sent out by security guards minutes later.

What struck me about the games I attended was the sense of camaraderie. I met soccer fans from different countries. Sometimes we were cheering for the same team and sometimes for opposite teams, but that didn't stop us from becoming friends. The stands were not divided be tween teams, and the interaction was often spirit-lifting.

I also watched the game in Sao Paulo that ousted (淘汰) Brazil from the World Cup. I was with friends at

a large bar which hosted a mix of Brazilian and German supporters. As Germany scored one goal after another, the sadness and even tears were visible on the faces of Brazilians. But German fans came to the Brazilians to comfort them and apologize that the game was ending with such a big gap. Everyone was hoping for a good match.

What I love about the World Cup is that it provides a chance for people to learn about other countries and cultures. People learn about the countries of the teams they support and about their opponents' history and culture. Soccer is a game that not only gives people the chance to learn about each other but also has the potential to unite people.

Sports can be a dividing force, but the true spirit of sports is about unity and fun. The matches at this World Cup have been exactly that so far, and I hope it remains so.

26. Why did the author mention his bar experience?

A. To present a fact.

B. To illustrate a point.

C. To solve a problem.

D. To make a comparison.
