Grace Cogan's favorite quote comes from American founding father Thomas Jefferson: I cannot live without books". The 14-year-old girl from Weston Missouri thinks the same thing.

Grace was born with a disease that affected her skin and eyes, and caused kidney problems. Doctors told her parents she might not live. Yet, she made it. However, she was often sick. During these 14 years. She had 22 operations and a lot of doctor's appointments. It was reading that calmed her in doctors' waiting rooms or during long drives to appointments. “I always have a book with me.” she said.

When Grace was little, her mother. Kelly, read Little House on the Prairie to her. Her dad Brian offered her more difficult historical novels like The Red Badge of Courage. Then Grace, despite serious eye problems, started reading on her own. with her nose usually buried in a book. That’s where she sees most clearly.

"She wanted to know how things worked. She was so curious.” Mid Joyce Burch, Grace's aunt.

Maybe because of those early books, or maybe because of where she lives-a farmhouse that's been home to five generations of her father's family-Grace came to love history.

She asked her parents to take her to different historical places. She read historical novels, from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to 1776. She even wrote a book, The Historical House, to explore the history of the farmhouse.

Because of her disease, Grace can’t go to a public school. Bui her love for history meant she came in fifth in the country for the National History Day competition (竞赛) this summer.

Grace's grandmother, Sandy Ryan, said that she was not really surprised when Grace called to tell her the

news. “That girl does not give up. We knew she would do something great." said Ryan,

Apart from reading, Grace also plays the piano and loves musical theater and performing. She would like to work in theater someday. If she can't, she wants to be an author, probably writing about history.

Grace’s bravery has inspired others.

“The time with Grace has been an amazing j ourney and a dventure.” said Lennie Medcalf, Grace's private teacher,“I look forward to seeing the world with Grace Cogan in it.”

A new app has been launched in South Africa to help harmonize the relationship between wildlife and humans.

Roadwatch, created by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), is designed to let drivers record any roadkill they see on the country's highways.

It may seem like a strange idea, but EWT says that it could become the perfect platform for receiving important data. Information on where endangered species (物种)are living and the danger that they are under from traffic can help to inform decisions on conservation matters (物质守恒)in the future.

People can use the app through Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS and Linkedin to report the species, location, time and date of the creature that has been seen in the road.

Wendy Collinson, field officer at EWT, suggested that it could lead to more people taking care on the roads and paying more attention to animals that may be trying to cross the roads. One of the biggest problems is with reptiles (爬行动物)and snakes, which she believes people hit on purpose, as they are generally seen as scary. Despite this, they are important to the health of ecosystems, just as all creatures are and also need to be protected.

Emily Taylor from EWT said. "Roadkill simply hasn't been studied here. The road ecology, and how many endangered species are being killed, is something we need to know more about. We want citizens to report as much as possible.

There is no shortage of apps to use in relation to wildlife spotting in South Africa, but most of them are concerned with animals that have not been knocked down, including those helping to collect information of where certain species have been seen, such as in parks.

57. Which is WRONG about the new app according to the passage?

B. Helping to collect information about animals in parks.

B. teach people about the importance of ecosystems

C. make every driver a future environmentalist

D. prevent snakes from biting drivers

59. According to Wendy Collinson, people hit reptiles and snakes on purpose because .

B. EWT has done necessary research on roadkill

C. wildlife passages across the highways are being built

D. injured animals arc receiving proper treatment at EWT

Two old beggars were sitting on a busy street corner in the downtown section of the city. The cold wind made them sit together for heat and comfort. They watched helplessly as people walked by, some ignoring them on purpose and others too caught up in their own cares to even notice their existence. Every so often, a kind-hearted woman or a small child would drop a few coins in the hats which lay in front of them on the icy sidewalk.

As the crowd began to die down, they were getting ready to leave. Just then they noticed a man walking toward them. He was obviously a wealthy man-they could tell that from his finely tailored suit and the gold pocket watch.

The first beggar whispered to the second with excitement,“ He's coming our way!’

The two tried not to look directly at the man as he stepped closer to them, but they couldn't help staring up with expectation as he reached into his pocket and took something out.

“Thunk” was the only sound they heard as what looked like a piece of hard candy, wr apped doubly in tissue paper, hit each of their waiting hats. The rich man turned and continued on his way, not making a backward glance.

“How disgusting (令人恶心的)!” said the first beggar,as soon as the rich man was out of sight.“ He could have easily left us a few coins or a spare bill, but he plays jokes on us with a piece of rock candy."

He looked at the wrapped offering with disgust. "Who does he think we are-children? There’s no way we can even eat this—we have no teeth.

The beggar picked up the object with the very tips of his fingers and threw it into the gutter (臭水沟).He watched as it floated a few yards in the stream of muddy water and disappeared into the drain at the end of the street. Then, he gathered up his things and walked away.

The second beggar looked at the candy in his hat, then at his departing friend. His first impulse (冲动)was to throw the donation in the trash can. But his second thought made him change his mind.

“I haven't h ad anything like this for ages, he though t. "I can’t chew it. but I can let it stay in my mouth for the sugary juices. How nice of that man to offer me something so sweet!"

He eagerly opened the paper outside, and then paused as his hands touched the white tissue paper inside. “Maybe I shoul d save it for another time,he thought. “It won't spoil, and I could eat i t later when I'm really hungry.”

The beggar hesitated for a moment, and then declared aloud. "Who cares? He wanted me to have it anyway. I might as well enjoy it now.”

With that, he unwrapped the white tissue paper, but to his surprise, there was no hard rock candy inside. Instead, into his fingers fell a shiny white pearl worth thousands of dollars.
